With the popularity of last week's "Who Should Play Captain America" poll and Secret Identity's Captain America casting call, it's only fair that Steve Rogers' greatest nemesis gets his turn in the Splash Page spotlight.
The Red Skull is one of Marvel's most loathsome villains, meaning that an actor capable of such a sinister performance is required for "The First Avenger: Captain America." We've already seen a classic Marvel rogue mishandled on screen in the form of Doctor Doom—going a similar route with the Skull would completely neuter the "Captain America" movie.
For a successful Cap flick, Marvel needs someone to faithfully bring the terrifying villain to life—and these five actors have exactly what it takes. Read more...
Last we heard from the "Magdalena" camp, the upcoming adaptation of the Top Cow property had landed "Midnight Meat Train" director Ryûhei Kitamura to helm the project, with "The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations" writer Holly Brix penning the screenplay.
Chronicling the adventures of a direct descendant of Mary Magdalene who protects the world against evil using a variety of supernatural powers, "Magdalena" already has its stars in "Step Up" actress Jenna Dewan (playing the heroine, Patience) and "Hellboy II" actor Luke Goss (playing Patience's mentor, Kristof). Last year, we featured a week of video interviews with Dewan (we've embedded some of them in this post), and now we thought we'd check in with the new "Magdalena" writer to see where the project's at these days—and where she's planning to take it.
MTV: Where is the film at right now? Where are you in the process?
HOLLY BRIX: Right now, we're working out a deal so that I can start writing. We're not at the beginning of the process, but we're just going to script. Read more...
Another Comic-Con has come and gone, but I arrived back at Splash Page HQ to find a big ol' pile of boxes waiting for me. Some of the new swag included some great Comic-Con exclusives -- not the least of which was a massive Abe Sapien that is now staring down at me as a write this. It is unnerving, to say the least.

There were also some great books, toys and an assortment of geekery that reminds me why being the editor of Splash Page is such a privilege.

As some of you following me on Twitter might already be aware, I left the friendly confines of Splash Page HQ last week to visit with the fine folks at Mezco Toyz and get the first look at some very cool, customized figures from their new line of "Mez-Itz" vinyl toys.
A few months back, Mezco announced that they were resizing the popular line of collectible figures from a 2.5- to a 6-inch scale, and would be delivering bunches of the blank figures to artists and animators around the world to create their own unique takes on the toys. From comic creators to musicians and animators, a variety of artists answered their call, and 60 of the custom Mez-Itz are going on display for the first time at San Diego's Comic-Con International this month.
But you can get your first, exclusive look at some of the coolest figures weeks ahead of time here on Splash Page! Read more...
Things can get pretty hectic around Splash Page HQ sometimes, but one of the constant reminders of just how great a job I have is the arrival of new books, movies and other comics-related swag each day. Whether it's comics I've heard of but never got around to reading, movies or television series I need to catch up on, or any number of cool, strange or otherwise funky toys to populate my already-crowded desk, every day brings a new package, it seems.
That's why I've decided to pick a few of the items I received in the mail each week and post a photo of them here on Splash Page, with a few thoughts about each one. Maybe you're already familiar with one of them and can offer some thoughts of your own, or maybe I'll be the first to tell you about something cool that flew under your radar. Either way, I'm just looking forward to reading what you have to say about them -- so don't hesitate to chime in with a comment or two.
So, let's begin, shall we? Read more...
When "Hellboy" and "The Hobbit" director Guillermo Del Toro dropped by Splash Page HQ recently to talk about his new novel, "The Strain," we also managed to pick his brain about a few other topics near and dear to our comics-lovin' hearts.
Earlier this week, we gave you what he had to say about the future of the "Hellboy" film franchise (and whether that universe will eventually merge with the Hellboy's comics continuity), but one thing that definitely surprised us during the conversation was Del Toro's confession that at one point, he came very close to bringing Marvel's Thunder God, Thor, to the screen.
They approached me for 'Thor,'" Del Toro told MTV News when asked whether Marvel had tried to tag him for any of their upcoming movies. "And for a long time we talked about that, because the mythology and the images were very attractive to me." Read more...
"Hellboy" and "Hellboy II" director Guillermo del Toro recently dropped by Splash Page HQ to discuss his new book "The Strain," and while the horror novel is certainly a good read, we had to ask about a few other important topics while we had the celebrated filmmaker's ear -- namely, the future of the "Hellboy" film franchise.
"I talked about that with [Hellboy creator] Mike Mignola, and I respect very much his decision," Del Toro told MTV News when asked if he had any plans to expand the "Hellboy" movie universe into comics. "He said to me, people have enough trouble distinguishing what comes from the movie and the comic." Read more...
Actor Heath Ledger, whose performance as The Joker in "The Dark Knight" already earned him a posthumous Oscar, was honored with yet another award during tonight's MTV Movie Awards.
The actor, who passed away in January 2008, was named "Best Villain" for his portrayal of Batman's clown-faced psychotic nemesis in a special MTV Movie Awards pre-show announcement. The MTV Movie Award is the latest in many honors the actor received for playing the Gotham City villain, this time beating out another nominee from a comic book movie, Luke Goss (who played Prince Nuada in "Hellboy II: The Golden Army"), as well as Derek Mears ("Friday the 13th"), Dwayne Johnson ("Get Smart") and Johnathon Schaech ("Prom Night"). FROM MTV MOVIES: Luke Goss played such a badass in "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" that he's up for two MTV Movie Awards come May 31: Best Villain and Best Fight. While he thinks he has a pretty good shot at Best Fight, he wouldn't mind losing the Best Villain trophy to a certain "Dark Knight" star.
"The late, great Heath Ledger! That's beyond tough competition," said Goss, who played Prince Nuada in the "Hellboy" sequel. "It's fun just to be nominated. He did a God-given performance. I think he should get it. He will get it. He should win given his performance. I think he's got everyone in his camp. I hope he wins it."
But Goss isn't willing to give away all his awards. He's also up for Best Fight, along with "Hellboy" star Ron Perlman, and given how much work he dedicated to the fighting in the film, he hopes he has a better shot at that one.

With "Angels & Demons" hitting theaters today, it feels appropriate to look at some of popular culture's most memorable heavenly and hellish creatures -- even if literal otherworldly beings aren't a part of the Tom Hanks-starring film.
Since we pride ourselves on always finding the comics angle into every event, we've put together a short list of our favorite angels and demons in the comic book world.
