Tune in to the 2012 MTV Movie Awards

Fassbender

Looks like Matthew Vaughn isn't the only one checking in for more lessons at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.

Following news that the "X-Men: First Class" director has signed on to direct the superhero film's developing sequel, Heat Vision reports that the "First Class" cast is back on board as well. Specific names haven't been dropped beyond Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence, but one assumes that at least James McAvoy is part of that returning cast list, given how crucial Professor Charles Xavier is to the "First Class" universe.

Kate Mara

It's a good time to be Rooney Mara, what with her Oscar-nominated performance as Lisbeth Salander in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," and her football royalty family's current stake in the New York Giants taking on the New England Patriots at this year's Super Bowl.

Like her sister, Kata Mara is riding a solid wave as well, having just completed a literally haunting turn as undead psychopath Hayden on "American Horror Story." But it could have been an even better year for Mara, who was reportedly up for the role of Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" — an experience she's likely sad to have missed out on, but one she's excited to see on the big screen all the same.

"Christopher Nolan is one of my favorite directors and just to get the opportunity to test for such an iconic role as Catwoman was an honor," Mara told ESPN in a new interview.

X-Men

Excellent news: class is back in session at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters! It will be soon, at least, according to a new report that Matthew Vaughn is officially locked and loaded to direct a sequel to "X-Men: First Class."

Deadline reports that Vaughn and 20th Century Fox have just closed a deal for the "First Class" director to come back for another "X-Men" outing. Simon Kinberg is working on the film's screenplay, as previously reported, and Bryan Singer is once again producing.

No official title or casting news just yet, though we've been lovingly referring to the film as "X-Men: Second Class" for some time now, and it's widely assumed that James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender will be back in business as Professor X and Magneto before long.

Now that 2012 is finally upon us, it's time to face the harsh reality that after this year, there will be no further Christopher Nolan Batman movies to look forward to. It's a day we hoped would never come, and while it's still some months away, those months are going to fade all too fast.

As "The Dark Knight Rises" approaches, we're making a point of talking to as many people involved in Nolan's revival of the Batman franchise as possible — and with "The Grey" hitting theaters today, MTV News had the chance to chat with "Batman Begins" villain Liam Neeson about the impact Nolan's had on the superhero scene.

Arrow

Speedy is the wrong word, but things are moving swiftly on The CW's "Arrow," the upcoming pilot based on DC Comics' "Green Arrow" franchise. It's already known that the pilot, from "Green Lantern" movie duo Marc Guggenheim and Greg Berlanti, has nothing to do with "Smallville" actor Justin Hartley, who played Oliver Queen on the Superman-starring series for several seasons. A new casting breakdown only makes that news more official.

The TV Addict has scored a casting breakdown for "Arrow," revealing all kinds of familiar characters including Black Canary and Merlyn, albeit with a few changes. Some descriptions below the break.

Dark Knight Rises

"The Dark Knight Rises" isn't just Christopher Nolan's final dance with the Bat. It's also Oscar-winning actor Christian Bale's final dance as the Bat — and even if fans are sad to see him go, Bale himself is ready to fly off to newer pastures.

"We need different rhythms in our life, don't we, and to me it would be the wrong rhythm to jump into a franchise at this point," Bale told the New York Daily News about his time as Batman in a new interview. "For now, no, I'd be looking for new experiences."

In the interview, Bale spoke about his inspiration behind playing the Caped Crusader, chalking up a lot of credit to Frank Miller and David Mazzuchelli's "Batman: Year One" miniseries for turning him around on the potential that comic book characters have on the screen.

"Powers," the television adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming's comic book series, has been on a lot of fans' minds lately. FX chief John Landgraf admitted last week that the network has passed on the current version of the "Powers" pilot, and that they're currently considering reshoots. But according to actor Charles S. Dutton, who appears on the show as Captain Cross, an official decision needs to come soon, because contracts are on the cusp of changing.

"Last I heard, without bugging FX, is that they don't know either… but they have to come up with something fast, because on March 1, everybody's deal changes," Dutton told MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival, where he's busy promoting his new movie "LUV" with Common and Michael K. Williams. "If I was a betting man, I would be hedging the bet, because we're getting close to that contract date."

Walking Dead

Well, this feels like it should come with a spoiler alert, though admittedly, it's all conjecture for now. But proceed with caution, "Walking Dead" fans…

…because according to a new report, actor Jon Bernthal is in the running for a major reunion with Frank Darabont, a move that's potentially very telling about his continued days with the "Dead."

Bane

Bane isn't much of a talker. Or, more accurately, he is a talker, you just can't understand a single word he says. That's fine, though — he's a menacing figure to look at regardless, and you'll have more than enough opportunities to gawk at his back-breaking glory when "The Dark Knight Rises" travels to theaters this summer.

But if Christopher Nolan's final trip to Gotham City doesn't bring you the precise amount of Bane riches you fell you're owed, never fret: with enough time, patience and funding, you'll have the chance to own the masked vigilante yourself before too long… in action figure form, at the very least.
