Tune in to the 2012 MTV Movie Awards

When it was first revealed that Neil Gaiman was writing an episode of "Doctor Who," I know I wasn't alone in thinking it was a perfect match. One of my favorite authors writing an episode of my all-time favorite television series? Yes, please!

Fortunately, the Gaiman-penned episode "The Doctor's Wife" managed to be even better than everyone hoped when it premiered earlier this year, and earned rave reviews from newcomers and longtime fans alike. So, when the author dropped by MTV News HQ to discuss the 10th anniversary of his award-winning novel "American Gods," I made sure to ask him about the experience of taking on 47 years of "Doctor Who" history and taking fans on a journey deep inside the TARDIS.

"Approximately three and a half years ago, I had dinner with Steven Moffat in a very nice Chinese restaurant in London. Red wine was drunk [and] I was saying things like, 'Hypothetically speaking, should anybody ask me to write an episode of 'Doctor Who,' I would really quite like to,'" said Gaiman of the episode's origins. XerxesBack in April, producer Mark Canton told MTV News that the big-screen adaptation of Frank Miller's "300" spinoff "Xerxes" would not in fact be titled "Xerxes." While the studio hadn't decided on a new title at that point, things appear to have fallen into place since then, and we now have both a title and short list of two potential directors for the film.

According to Deadline, the new title of the film will be "300: Battle of Artemisia," and Zack Snyder will definitely not direct the project, which will be based on a new comic by Miller. A prequel/spinoff from "300" rather than a sequel, "Battle of Artemisia" follows the ascension of Persian king Xerxes to the god-like status he achieved before the events in "300."

The report also indicates that the studio is deciding between two directors for the film: Noam Murro and Jaume Collet-Serra. Read More...

FROM MOVIES BLOG: Back in April, we got word that Neil Gaiman's award-winning novel "American Gods" was being developed as an HBO television series by Tom Hanks' production studio Playtone — the same production house that developed "Band of Brothers" for the network.

This week marked the ten-year anniversary of "American Gods" hitting shelves, so when Gaiman dropped by the newsroom to talk about the new, "author's preferred text" edition of the book, we also managed to get in a few questions about the much-anticipated HBO series.

"From my perspective, I'm worrying about it one episode at a time, one season at a time," said Gaiman when asked about a recent report that suggested "American Gods" will be a six-season series, with 10-12 hour-long episodes each season and a $35-40 million budget.

RIPDRyan Reynolds appears to have his next comic book movie locked down, and it's looking less likely that it will involve a certain mouthy mercenary from the Marvel Universe.

As originally reported by Deadline, Universal Pictures has announced a release date of June 28, 2013, for "R.I.P.D.," an adaptation of a Dark Horse Comics series that will star Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges. The film will be directed by Robert Schwentke and follow a dead police officer who joins the supernatural "Rest In Peace Department" in order to investigate his own murder.

While the announcement is a vote of confidence for the project, it's uncertain what it means for the other comic book movie Reynolds is attached to star in: the "Deadpool" solo movie spinning out of his debut as the character in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Read More...

Back in March, "Preacher" director D.J. Caruso surprised a lot of comics fans by dropping the names of a few well-known actors he'd like to cast in the long-awaited adaptation of the gritty Vertigo comic book series.

Along with naming "Star Trek" actor Chris Pine as his choice for main character Jesse Custer and "I Am Number Four" star Alex Pettyfer as Saint of Killers, Caruso mentioned "Transformers" franchise actor Shia LaBeouf as someone he'd cast as the horrifically scarred Arseface. With that in mind, MTV News made sure to ask LaBeouf about the role during the "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" press junket.

"I love the ['Preacher'] comics," LaBeouf told MTV News. "I think Arseface would be awesome." Read More...

Christopher MeloniThe cast of "Man Of Steel," Zack Snyder's upcoming reboot of the Superman film franchise, has been filling out quite nicely in recent weeks, with another well-known actor joining the production this weekend.

As first reported by Deadline, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" actor Christopher Meloni will join the "Man Of Steel" cast in an unspecified role. While the initial report simply indicated that he would play a "major role" in the film, Meloni later told Vulture that he will play a general in the military and dismissed rumors that he would become the new face of Superman's arch enemy, Lex Luthor. Earlier this week, we heard from "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" lead Reeve Carney about the long, difficult road the show traveled to get to last week's Broadway premiere. And while he had a lot to say about the evolution of the story, characters, and theme of the show, "Turn Off The Dark" is, after all, a musical.

Given the hands-on involvement of U2 frontmen Bono and The Edge, we made sure to ask him about the music of "Turn Off The Dark" and how his own band, Carney, was involved with the production.

"Edge worked a lot with the band, and Bono did as well," Carney told MTV News. "They basically took my band, Carney, and worked with them as a trio for a few months, and then they eventually brought the full orchestra in. They used them to get the arrangements the way they wanted them to be, and sort of make them feel like a core rock n' roll band." Read More...

Captain AmericaA new poster for "Captain America: The First Avenger" has debuted online, offering yet another look at Chris Evans as Marvel's solder-turned-superhero Steve Rogers.

The new poster premiered at Yahoo Movies, and features an unmasked Captain America looking as stern as ever, with his iconic red, white, and blue shield in the foreground. The new poster doesn't sport a tagline, and for some reason, it doesn't feature Captain America punching Adolf Hitler, either.

Nevertheless, it's a nice shot of Evans as Marvel's famous super-soldier, and likely heralds the arrival of the second trailer for the film, which is expected to debut in the next day or two. Read More...
