Tune in to the 2012 MTV Movie Awards

FROM MTV NEWS: Neil Gaiman's award-winning novel "American Gods" first hit shelves back in 2001, sweeping up readers in a cross-country adventure that explored a world in which the gods of old struggled to remain relevant in modern American culture. Ten years later, "American Gods" is returning to shelves in a new form, celebrating its anniversary with an expanded, "author's preferred text" edition and the announcement of an upcoming television series based on the book.

"The truth is, as an author, all you are is grateful if you turn around 10 years after you wrote something and it's still in print," Gaiman told MTV News of all the fanfare surrounding the novel's 10th anniversary. "It makes me ridiculously happy as an author, but mostly it makes me ridiculously happy that my book is being read."

For Gaiman, "American Gods" offered a way to put words to his own experience in moving to America from England and the difference between how people view America from the outside and the eccentricities you discover from the inside of American culture.

The CrowIt's been a few months since our last update on "The Crow," Relativity Media's upcoming remake of the 1994 film starring Brandon Lee. As of our last report, "Limitless" actor Bradley Cooper was in talks to star in the film with director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo ("28 Weeks Later") behind the camera, but the film was still in search of a screenwriter.

That search ended this week with the studio's announcement that "Watchmen" screenwriter Alex Tse will script the remake, and Cooper will indeed play the role of gothic hero Eric Draven, who's resurrected from the dead to avenge his wife's brutal murder. Read More...

Locke & KeyIt could be the understatement of the year to say we were disappointed by the news that "Locke & Key" television series pilot might not make it to the small screen. The IDW Publishing comic is one of our favorites around Splash Page HQ, and everything seemed primed for it to make a successful jump from page to screen.

Alas, it wasn't meant to be (on the FOX network, at least), but now it looks like fans will indeed be able to check out the pilot episode — if they can make it to San Diego for this year's Comic-Con International.

Calling it "the most talked-about pilot not on the Fall schedule," IDW will screen "Locke & Key" on Friday, July 22. The screening will be followed by a Q&A panel with comic creators Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, as well as pilot writer Josh Friedman, and producers Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci. Read More...

Jason PatricYesterday we found out who will play female lead Deena Pilgrim in the upcoming "Powers" television series, and today brings news of the male lead actor, too.

According to Deadline, actor Jason Patric will play Christian Walker, a homocide detective tasked with investigating crimes involving superhuman powers. His partner, Deena Pilgrim, will be played by Lucy Punch. The only other actor cast so far is Charles S. Dutton, who will play Deena and Christian's boss, Captain Cross.

This isn't the first role for Patric in a comic book movie adaptation, as he played the villain in last year's film based on "The Losers" comic book series. Read More...

Cowboys & aliensThere's just over a month until "Cowboys & Aliens" hits theaters, and that means the marketing campaign will be switching into high gear in the near future. We got our first taste of what's to come today, thanks to a new one-sheet promo poster for the film.

The new poster features stars Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, and has the pair staring off into the distance, as if they're wondering, "Hey, what's that in the distance? Is that... an alien?"

Okay, maybe that's not what they're thinking in the photo — but you can see it for yourself below and form your own opinions. Read More...

It's no secret that we're eagerly anticipating the return of "The Walking Dead," AMC's hit television series based on Robert Kirkman's long-running comic book about survivors of a zombie apocalypse. Sadly, it looks like we still have a few months to go before Rick Grimes and his ragtag crew return to the small screen, but the network has offered up some video that filming is well underway for the second season.

Posted over on AMC's official "Walking Dead" blog, the behind-the-scenes video offers some tidbits from the first day of filming in Atlanta, which apparently involves the cast members spending a lot of time under abandoned cars. Read More...

Lucy PunchFor weeks now, "Powers" co-creator Brian Michael Bendis has been teasing fans with vague reports on the casting for the FX television series based on his hit comic. Now we finally have a big piece of official casting news, with actress Lucy Punch cast as Officer Deena Pilgrim.

While Punch might not be the actress many fans were initially pulling for ("Battlestar Galactica" star Katee Sackhoff was an early favorite among fans), her resume includes a long list of films ("Hot Fuzz," "Dinner With Schmucks," etc.) that should have people feeling good about "Powers" impending arrival on the small screen. Her status as a relative unknown could also afford her more ability to make the role her own — something we'd all like to see in the much-anticipated, character-driven series.

According to Deadline, which first reported the casting, filming on "Powers" is slated to begin this summer in Chicago. Read More...

"Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" finally made its Broadway premiere last week, with actor and musician Reeve Carney playing nerd-turned-superhero Peter Parker in the production.

Carney recently dropped by MTV News HQ to chat about opening night, how the show has changed from its initial run, and what was going through his head when every day seemed to bring more negative attention for "Turn Off The Dark."

"Opening night was special because it was easy to make it fresh," he said when asked about whether it was easy to make opening night special after such a long preview run. "When you do a long run of a show — funny enough, even though we just opened it has been a pretty long running show — you struggle to find ways to keep it fresh." Read More...

Yes, you read that headline correctly, and yes, it is possibly the most ridiculous headline I have written in my entire career. The best part? It happened.

Apparently, "Doctor Who" star Matt Smith was one of several actors who participated in a recent event called "24 Hour Plays" in Los Angeles. For his part in the event, which tasks writers with scripting a play in one night and having actors perform it the next, Smith played a "very confused Batman" who wakes up on an autopsy table.

Matt Smith

There's a full report on the event and Smith's performance over at The Telegraph, while The Daily Mail has a bunch of great photos of Smith and some of the other actors. Oh, and Smith's take on Batman wasn't the only comics-friendly performance during the show. Read More...
