Astro Boy

MTV News recently had the chance to visit Imagi Studios where the finishing touches are being put on “Astro Boy,” set to hit theaters October 23.

Though the character isn’t quite as recognizable to US audiences, “Astro Boy” is one of the most enduring Japanese pop icons, dating back to his 1952 debut in the manga by Osamu Tezuka. The film tells the story of a scientist, Tenma (Nicolas Cage) who replaces his lost son with a powerful robot (Freddie Highmore), who must then come to terms with his own identity as both a child and a hero. Welcome to HoxfordWith his next directing project, “The Lightning Thief,” moving forward, “I Love You, Beth Cooper” director Chris Columbus is still attached to produce an adaptation of Ben Templesmith's “Welcome to Hoxford” comic book series, but is uncertain if he’ll take the director’s chair.

“You never know,” Columbus told MTV News, “You never know where that vibe is going to take you or where you’re going to want to go.”

The film, based on the IDW comic book series Templesmith, tells the story of a violent battle between werewolves and convicts in a privatized hospital for the criminally insane. Though blood and guts is not necessarily what one associates with Columbus, the director explains that a great story is more important to him than being family-friendly. Read More...

Alexis BledelThough she’s not sure when the film will move forward, actress Alexis Bledel has been told that the script for “Sin City 2” is complete and that this one is going to be a prequel, at least as far as her character is concerned.

“Someone told us yesterday that there’s a script,” Bledel's “Post Grad” co-star Zach Gilford told MTV News during a chat with the pair.

“I don’t know what their source was,” added Alexis, “but they said they read the second script. ... Apparently, [I’m] back because it’s a prequel. Because [I’m] supposed to die in the first one. But you don’t see it, so maybe she doesn’t.” Read More...

Joseph Gordon-LevittThough recent rumors have sounded the death-knell for Warner Bros’ live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo’s seminal manga, “Akira,” Joseph Gordon-Levitt isn’t ready to say die.

“You never know,” said the “500 Days of Summer” star with a coy smile when asked if the project was truly dead. Though not quite a confirmation of anything, it’s a far-cry from his comments last year which didn’t acknowledge any connection to the project whatsoever. Read More...

'Preacher'While speaking with MTV News this weekend about his upcoming film "Away We Go," director Sam Mendes dropped a few details about the status of his much-anticipated, big-screen version of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's comic book series, "Preacher."

With a complicated storyline and some weighty subject matter, it's tricky to imagine the best way to pull off a live-action "Preacher." Though Mendes is relatively mum at the moment (until he has a script in front of him, he told MTV), he did say that screenwriter John August is moving along with his first draft.

"He's doing pretty well," Mendes told MTV News, "He's about halfway through. There's a long way to go yet, but I'm very, very hopeful. I think it could be amazing." Read More...

Joseph Gordon-LevittFROM MOVIES BLOG: Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt shared with MTV News that, while his take Cobra Commander in this summer's "GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra" may not match the cartoon exactly, it was certainly influenced by it.

"I think that it's respectfully inspired by the cartoon voice," Gordon-Levitt explained during an interview promoting his soon-to-be-released Sundance hit "500 Days of Summer." "But it's just like how in '[X-Men Origins:] Wolverine' you don't want to see Hugh Jackman dressed up in a yellow jumpsuit like the Wolverine in the comics."

Alexis BledelWhile promoting her upcoming film "Post Grad", Alexis Bledel confirmed with MTV News that she'll be returning to her decidedly darker role of Old Town prostitute Becky as soon as "Sin City 2" finally gets off the ground.

While Alexis is certain that her character will be back, no one at all seems certain about when, exactly, the completed script might begin production.

“I don’t know who knows when…” Bledel told MTV News, “…but they keep saying they’re going to shoot it. Hopefully very soon.” Read More...

Matthew McConaugheyThough he hasn’t seen a script yet, Matthew McConaughey seems to have changed his tune regarding a potential role in the “Captain America” film.

Late last year, McConaughey didn’t seem to know who “Captain America” was, much less have an interest in playing him, but repeated mentions of his name with that of the patriotic leader of The Avengers may have sent the “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” star to the back-issue bin. Read More...

James Marsters[EDITOR'S NOTE: This post has been edited to correct several inaccuracies re: comic book projects' status and creative teams. "Spike and Dru" publisher Dark Horse Comics has also provided Splash Page with an official response to James Marsters comments. -RM]

Though its been off the airwaves for years (and this is back when TV had airwaves), the Buffyverse lives on today in comic book form. James Marsters, the "Dragonball Evolution" actor who played vampire villain-turned-hero Spike in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel," recently shared some thoughts with with MTV News about his experience working with “Buffy” comics and how he tries to keep up with his vampiric alter ego.

“I like what I see,” Marsters told MTV News of IDW’s "Angel" series.

With ongoing “Buffy” and “Angel” comics currently published by two separate companies (Dark Horse and IDW, respectively), the character of Spike is, at the moment, making all his appearances in the latter. But when both series were still on the air, Dark Horse controlled the complete Buffyverse and actually hired Marsters to co-write a one-shot comic book, “Spike and Dru,” an experience that the actor confessed wasn’t one of his favorite memories.
