Looper

by Ryan Rigley

Today marks the release of one of the best sci-fi movies of the year: "Looper." Starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (as a Young Bruce Willis), "Looper" tells the tale of a hired gun whose job description includes killing predestined targets sent 30 years into the past at a designated time and place. But when one of the targets turns out to be the future version of himself, the hired gun hesitates and things start to get all sorts of crazy.

In honor of "Looper," we thought it best to come up with our own list of noted time-travelers. Comic book time-travelers, to be specific! These characters range everywhere from superhero to supervillain, but the one thing that they all have in common is the ability to travel through time. Check 'em out after the jump!

Guillermo del Toro's "The Strain" is about to infect a small screen near you. FX ordered a pilot based on del Toro and Chuck Hogan's novel and comic book series just last week, with former "Lost" showrunner Carlton Cuse attached to oversee the fictional vampire epidemic.

While we wait for the show to spring to life, there's no time like now to catch up on the "Strain" comics from Dark Horse and be fully prepared for FX's eventual blood-letting. In fact, we've got your first exclusive look at three covers for the upcoming "Strain" volume one trade paperback and issues #10 and #11. Check them out below!

The "Firefly" 10 year anniversary has come and gone, but our thoughts are still all aboard Serenity. Given the huge reception the show's cast and crew received at Comic-Con this year, it's clear we're not the only ones pining for further adventures of Malcolm Reynolds and his band of big damn heroes.

Even Mal himself has given some thought to the future of the "Firefly" brand. When MTV News caught up with Nathan Fillion at the Toronto International Film Festival (where he was promoting "Much Ado about Nothing," his latest Joss Whedon collaboration), we asked Fillion where he'd like to see "Firefly" go next.

Planet Hulk

I know I'm not the only one who thinks Hulk was the greatest part of "Marvel's The Avengers," just as I'm not the only one disappointed that another "Hulk" solo film isn't anywhere on the immediate horizon. But who knows what the future holds after the "Avengers" sequel? In fact, with all signs pointing to Earth's mightiest heroes embracing the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe, is it possible that we might see a live-action "Planet Hulk" in the future? Is that something Marvel could pull off?

"I don't think there's a lot that we couldn't do someday, as the cinematic universe continues to grow and expand and get as big as the comic book universe," Marvel's Kevin Feige told me when I asked him if we'd ever see a movie based on "Planet Hulk," the Greg Pak-written epic that sees the Jade Giant as a rebel leader on an alien planet, "Gladiator" style.

"'Planet Hulk' is a cool story," he added. "'World War Hulk' is a cool story."

Anna Kendrick

Will Anna Kendrick be Marvel's next leading lady? It's an entirely possible outcome, considering that her name was mentioned as one of three alleged front-runners for a new role in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" about a month ago. (Imogen Poots and Felicity Jones were the other two names to crop up for the part.)

Since that initial report, we've heard approximately zilch. Now, after an interview MTV News had with Kendrick at the Toronto International Film Festival (where she was supporting her new cop drama "End of Watch," out today), we have a little more to add — specifically, that she's not talking about it.

Heath Ledger

The "Dark Knight" trilogy might be over, but we have a feeling we'll still be talking about it around these parts for years to come. In fact, today, we're looking back at the middle installment of the Christopher Nolan-helmed series — specifically, we're looking at the Clown Prince of Crime himself.

Reddit user tone_is_everything unearthed a "Dark Knight" photo gallery featuring Heath Ledger in full Joker make-up, going through multiple psychotic poses that are sure to put a smile on your face. See how he got those scars with a selection of photos posted below.

Thanos

With six Avengers, three S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and one hell of a super-villain standing front and center throughout the 143-minute runtime of "Marvel's The Avengers," it's somewhat remarkable that the character most people left theaters talking about was Thanos, the purple-skinned menace glimpsed ever-so-briefly in the middle of the film's credits. But Thanos' sudden rise to infamy didn't shock the folks at Marvel Studios one bit.

"There's a great track record now about lobbing something in at the last moment to get the audience buzzing," Marvel's Kevin Feige told MTV News about the secret villain tucked into the ending of "The Avengers," which hits Blu-ray and DVD on September 25. "Particularly when it came to Thanos, [we knew] that most people in that audience had no idea who that purple guy was — but they could clearly tell he was important, and knew if they asked the two or three people sitting next to them, somebody would know who he was."

Firefly

by Tami Katzoff (@tvtamijo)

Today at The Weekly Whedon we celebrate the 10th anniversary of “Firefly.” It’s a bittersweet celebration; on September 20th, 2002, the show premiered on Fox but was cancelled after only eleven episodes aired. Captain Mal, Inara, Wash, Jayne and the rest of the Serenity gang disappeared from our TV screens way too soon.

“I always think of ‘Firefly’ as this wonderful, beautiful island that rose out of the ocean that I got to live on for a while,” says writer/producer Jane Espenson, who scripted the episode “Shindig.” And as evidenced by this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, plenty of folks are still passionate about Joss Whedon’s space western.

“It has a reach,” Espenson says. “It’s not just that people like the show, but people are touched by the show. People are really moved by it.”

Executive producer Tim Minear remains an outspoken defender of “Firefly.” The following are his thoughts and recollections about working on the project.

Captain America

Worship Joss Whedon and Robert Downey Jr. all you want, but give credit where it's due: without the folks spinning the wheels at Marvel Studios, like president of production Kevin Feige, the modern-day superhero movie landscape would be a very different place.

Feige spoke with MTV News recently about the monumental success of "The Avengers," and how Whedon's vision and Marvel's prior films paved the way for the studio's triumph this summer. He also weighed in on DC's rumored plans for a "Justice League" film in 2015, a project that would seemingly break away from Marvel's proven model of using solo franchises to lead up to bigger team movies like "Avengers."
