Tune in to the 2012 MTV Movie Awards

When Frank Darabont was first announced as the producer and pilot director of "The Walking Dead," I'll be the first to admit that I was shocked — not because he didn't seem right for the gig, but because the award-winning director of "The Mist" and "The Shawshank Redemption" was such an absolutely perfect choice to handle Robert Kirkman's post-apocalyptic zombie epic.

Great from-the-start pairings of filmmaker and source material rarely happen these days, but when they do, well... Let's just say "The Walking Dead" star Andrew Lincoln, who plays main character Rick Grimes, had no small amount of praise for the man behind the camera when the series make its debut on AMC this weekend.

"[Darabont] is obviously one of the great filmmakers of all time," Lincoln told MTV News. "He's made two of the greatest films, in my opinion, in movie history. I went with high expectations and every day I went to work they were exceeded." Read More...

"The Walking Dead" makes its big debut on television this weekend, giving small-screen audiences a taste of what fans of Robert Kirkman's award-winning comic have known for years: the post-apocalyptic, zombie-filled adventures of Rick Grimes are simply some of the best storytelling out there.

But as any fan will tell you, it's not just the scripts that make "The Walking Dead" what it is — there's also a pair of talented artists (original artist Tony Moore and current, longtime artist Charlie Adlard) that make the series even more compelling. That's why we're psyched to give away a copy of "The Walking Dead: The Cover" from Image Comics, collecting the first 50 covers of "The Walking Dead" with commentary from the book's creators and various unpublished, never-before-seen art from the series.

We're mere days away from the premiere of "The Walking Dead" television series now, and while Robert Kirkman, Frank Darabont, and everyone else associated with the project assure us there will be plenty of surprises for longtime readers of the comic, it's always interesting to find out whether the cast themselves are keeping up with the print adventures of Rick Grimes and his ragtag group of zombie-apocalypse survivors.

During New York Comic Con, I posed that question to cast members Norman Reedus (who plays a new character invented for the TV series named Daryl Dixon), Laurie Holden (Andrea), and Steven Yeun (Glenn).

"I knew the comic book visually, but I never really got into the characters and stuff, but on set I was reading them and trying to catch up and see where people go," Reedus told MTV News. "It's good that [Daryl Dixon] isn't in the comic book, because I'm such a freak I would try to find out when I die." Read More...

"The Walking Dead" television series premieres on Halloween night, but as perfect as that timing seems to be for AMC's adaptation of the popular post-apocalyptic zombie comic, it wasn't the original schedule the network had planned. According to "Walking Dead" creator (and television series executive producer) Robert Kirkman, the network punted on its original premiere date after realizing it would be going head to head with Minnesota Vikings quarterback and future Hall of Fame inductee Brett Favre.

"Can I talk out of school? I don't know if I can [say] this, but that wasn't our original launch date — which I think is the funniest story ever," Kirkman told MTV News during New York Comic Con earlier this month. Read More...

Our week of "The Walking Dead" coverage continues today with a segment from our recent New York Comic Con interview with the cast of the AMC television series.

As I mentioned in my report from the "Walking Dead" set back in June, hordes of zombies weren't the only enemy the cast faced during filming, as brutal temperatures in Atlanta added a real-life threat to the fictional zombie apocalypse. The series' weighty emotional content also took its toll on the cast, the actors told MTV News.

"I think it sticks with us more on an emotional level than on a fright level for zombies," said Steven Yeun, who plays Glenn in the series. "The zombies look ridiculous, so there are moments that are terrifying. But man, I noticed this one time we were in this specific scene, when Rick is reunited with his family, and the way that he played it, I was like, 'Oh, that's the kind of show we're on.'" Way back in April, AMC ended speculation over who would play Rick Grimes in "The Walking Dead" television series by naming Andrew Lincoln the series' lead. Fan reaction was initially mixed, with many questioning the decision to cast a British actor as a Kentucky policeman — but the network quickly removed any doubts from fans' minds with the first batch of photos and footage from "The Walking Dead."

When Andrew Lincoln dropped by Splash Page HQ recently, I asked him about those first few weeks as the new face of Rick Grimes, and how he prepared himself to face both flesh-hungry zombies and "Walking Dead" fans.

"It was a big surprise to me as well," said Lincoln of landing the role. "I'm from London, I grew up in the West Country... But I think there was something that Frank responded to when I put myself on tape." Read More...

The Walking DeadWith the Halloween premiere of "The Walking Dead" fast approaching, I don't think I'm alone in noticing a few more shambling, flesh-hungry creatures with lifeless eyes and pasty skin than usual on my daily commute through Manhattan.
