Tune in to the 2012 MTV Movie Awards

CrosshairOne of the many stories to come out of San Diego Comic-Con this year was a deal between comic book publisher Top Cow and Mandeville Films to create a big-screen adaptation of "Crosshair," one of the upcoming titles in Top Cow's "Pilot Season" line.

Co-written by comics veteran Marc Silvestri and former studio executive, movie producer, and comic book book author Jeff Katz ("Booster Gold"), "Crosshair" tells the story of a CIA assassin turned family man who discovers that he's been brainwashed with orders to kill the President in the next 48 hours. He must uncover the conspiracy behind the plan before someone triggers his "programming."

"Crosshair" is set to hit shelves October 13 as part of Top Cow's "Pilot season" event, in which readers can check out the first issues of several potential ongoing series and decide which one should continue.

I spoke to Katz about the "Crosshair" comic and movie deal, and who he'd like to see in front of and behind the camera in a perfect world. The crew at Top Cow has also provided Splash Page readers with the first look at "Crosshair" ahead of its release next week! Read More...

With Marvel's "The Avengers" on the horizon, many fans are wondering when DC Entertainment will announce a "Justice League" film. There's no indication of when or if such an announcement will be made, but fans nearly had a "Justice League" movie to call their own three years ago before it got canceled — largely thanks to the Writers Guild of America strike in 2007.

"The Social Network" star Armie Hammer was one of the young actors cast in "Justice League Mortal," a film that never got off the ground but came quite close. Hammer, who would have played Batman in the film, recently spoke with MTV News and recalled the events that led up to the project's termination.

"We had gotten a long way into pre-production," said Hammer about the ill-fated Australia-set production. "We were about to start shooting when the writer's strike happened at the end of 2007, and then the Australian government denied a 40% tax rebate that they thought they were going to have, so a lot of things just when wrong." nemesisMost writers hope they’ll see at least one of their creations brought to life on the big screen one day, but comic writer Mark Millar has already been lucky enough to see two — and he has at least two more on the way.

Besides his secret project with Leinil Francis Yu, Millar is set to bring his and artist Steve McNiven’s antihero story “Nemesis” to life with director Tony Scott. And with the success of films like “Wanted” and “Kick-Ass,” it doesn’t appear Hollywood will stop throwing money at him anytime soon.

[UPDATE: Mark Millar has contacted MTV News to clarify several elements that were misunderstood in the original interview. We've edited the post and placed these corrections in BOLD/CAPITALIZED text. -RM]

“They reckon the budget on this thing will probably be around $150 MILLION mark. It’s a very expensive film, it’s got a lot of big set pieces,” he told MTV News while promoting his recently launched "CLiNT" comics magazine. “So the nice thing is, it means we can hopefully afford who we want to work with.” Read More...

SmallvilleThe final season of "Smallville" kicks off tonight (Friday, September 24) on The CW, and there's no shortage of questions fans are hoping to see answered in Clark Kent and Lois Lane's final set of adventures in the long-running series.

Over the last nine seasons, we've seen a variety of familiar heroes and villains pass through Clark's life, the introduction of Superman's red-and-blue suit, the beginnings of the Justice League, and a journey that's taken Clark from his Smallville farm to the Daily Planet office in Metropolis. Now poised to become the longest-running U.S. science-fiction television series in history, "Smallville" appears to be pulling out all the stops in its final season, with new cast announced on an almost daily basis, and an over-arching plot that pits Superman against one of his most dangerous cosmic foes: Darkseid. Oh, and what would the final season be without Lex Luthor?

I spoke with "Smallville" producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders ahead of tonight's premiere to get some details about the final season, find out happened behind the scenes, and relay a few questions from fans in the Twitterverse. Read More...

Mark MillarNothing’s ever a sure thing in Hollywood — even the most bankable actors, actresses and directors can have flops. When their film hits theaters, there's always a chance of failure, but when you make it a comic book movie, the risk seems even higher.

So far, Mark Millar has an impressive batting average with film adaptations of his comics “Wanted” and “Kick-Ass” grossing close to $440 million dollars worldwide, not including DVD sales.

Granted, “Wanted” did have one very valuable asset on it’s side: Angelina Jolie. But seeing as how she’s confirmed that she won't return for the sequel, will it even happen?

“Well, 'Wanted 2' is complicated,” Millar told MTV News while promoting his recently launched "CLiNT" comics magazine. “There’s no book [for] 'Wanted 2.' I would like to do [the movie]. I say if it happens, great. If it doesn’t, I’m not bothered.” Read More...

Back in June, the creation of a new department within Marvel Entertainment dedicated to development of television properties had everyone speculating about the company's plans for the small screen.

During this year's Comic-Con in San Diego, I sat down with Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada to discuss those plans, and find out whether this means we'll be seeing some live-action Marvel projects in the TV world to accompany their already established animated series.

"We have a strategy at Marvel — nothing we're really ready to talk about," Quesada told MTV News. "What I can talk about is that it's a brave new world for Marvel. Now that we've been purchased by Disney, we're part of the Disney family. Our strength, our leverage is that much more." Read More...

Will EisnerHaving experienced firsthand the ferocity and horrors of World War II and wars in Korea and Vietnam on both the national and personal level, like all of us, veteran writer/artist Will Eisner saw something nine years ago he never thought possible: a devastating terrorist attack on New York City and the Pentagon. While both attacks were horrific, the strike and subsequent destruction of the World Trade Center in New York City hit closest to home for Eisner, who grew up in the city and lovingly showed it as a character in many of his works.

Just days after the tragedy of September 11, 2001, MTV News producer Brian Jacks spoke to the native New Yorker about the tragic and emotional events that had gripped his city. Will Eisner has since passed away, but his thoughts are just as poignant today as they were nine years ago. Read More...

Kick-Ass 2If you’ve been eagerly anticipating the sequel to Mark Millar’s hit comic book series “Kick-Ass,” this is your lucky day... and week, for that matter. Why? Because we have an exclusive sneak peek at "Kick-Ass 2" (the comic), courtesy of Millar's new monthly magazine debuting this week, “CLiNT.”

Kick-Ass 2” follows immediately after ‘Kick-Ass,’” Millar told MTV News. “You see how Dave has inspired people to become amateur superheroes, Red Mist has inspired people in the sequel to become amateur supervillains. So what we have is two rival gangs of super characters getting together in New York.”

And what about the sequel to the mega-successful film adaptation of the comic starring Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Chloe Moretz? To paraphrase the Red Mist, wait 'til they get a load of this! Read More...

Things To ComeActor Walter Koenig is best known for playing Pavel Chekov, the navigator for the U.S.S. Enterprise in the original "Star Trek" television series and films, but over the course of a career that has spanned more than 50 years of acting, writing, and directing, he's managed to carve out a niche for himself in other areas, too — including the comics world.

The author of Malibu Comics' early-'90s series "Raver," Koenig returns to the comics world next year with "Things To Come," a four-issue miniseries he's scripting that will be published by Bluewater Productions. Set in a post-apocalyptic world in which vampires have become the dominant species, Koenig's tale promises to feature a very different take on the vampire stories that have become all the rage these days.

I spoke with Koenig today to find out more about the series, as well as Bluewater's plans to re-issue the original three-issue "Raver" series next year with a brand new story featuring the character. Read More...

30 Days of Night: Dark DaysA few weeks ago, we brought you the news that "30 Days of Night: Dark Days" — the sequel to David Slade's 2007 film "30 Days of Night" — was headed to shelves October 5 on DVD and Blu-Ray. Now we have some brand new images for you to checkout ahead of this weekend's premiere of the "Dark Days" trailer at Comic-Con, and some thoughts from one of the co-creators of the "30 Days" franchise in print and on the big screen.

Based on the celebrated horror comic created by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith, "Dark Days" picks up where the previous film left off, with actress Kiele Sanchez taking over the role of Stella Oleson previously played by Melissa George. Ben Ketai directs the new installment of the "30 Days" franchise, based on a script he co-wrote with Niles.

I spoke with Niles to get some thoughts on the next chapter in the "30 Days" universe and get a sneak peek at a few new shots from the film. Read More...
