Captain America

by Brett White

With the first official trailer for "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" still a few months away (it's debuting in front of "Thor: The Dark World," of course), we're ready to pounce on any "Captain America" news that comes our way. Let's face it: we're really excited for that film 'round these parts. That's why we're pretty excited about Marvel's new "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" website.

The official site comes with all the standard stuff: hi-res pics and concept art (nothing we haven't seen before), as well as various wallpapers. The site does offer something new in the form of... music.

The Avengers

What's a great superhero film without an equally epic soundtrack? Hans Zimmer brought life to Nolan's Gotham in his first two Batman movies, and it's almost impossible to think of Richard Donner's "Superman" without thinking of John Williams' iconic score.

We now know who will write the music for May's gathering of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. After being long-rumored as the film's composer, Alan Silvestri has announced on his website that he will compose the score for Joss Whedon's "The Avengers."

Geek Gift Guide 2010Thanksgiving is almost here, and that means there's only a month of shopping left in the holiday season. However, while this can be a scary realization for many people, you don't have to worry — because we've got ideas for the geeks on your list (or anyone else you want to convert to a life of geekery) covered.

This year, we're giving you the next best thing to actually buying the gifts for you. Your friendly neighborhood Splash Page team has come up with a wide-ranging list of books, games, toys, music and various other things to buy for everyone on your list — from the hardcore fanboys and fangirls to someone who's still learning the difference between Green Lantern and Green Hornet.

In the end, we tried to avoid some of the most obvious comics-related gifts this year and give you a mash-up of our own wishlists and the items we're planning to buy for our own friends and family. Here's hoping you find it helpful when it comes time for you to start dropping your hard-earned money on manufactured holiday joy. Read More...

Danny ElfmanTo say that the long (25-plus years) partnership between composer Danny Elfman and director Tim Burton has been a magical one is an understatement — especially for a film score nerd like me. From "Batman" and "Edward Scissorhands" to "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and the "Simpsons" theme, there's a good chance you've been exposed to one of their many, many collaborations.

Earlier this week, we brought you an exclusive clip from quite possibly the most epic box set I've ever seen: The Danny Elfman & Tim Burton 25th Anniversary Music Box (available now). It's a massive collection of the duo's 13 scores together, featuring more than 19 hours of music, an exclusive DVD, and a long list of rare audio, video, and collectible material.

I was lucky enough to speak with Elfman about this must-have set, how things have changed since he and Burton first teamed up, what convinced him to share so many unreleased demos and ideas, and a surprising behind-the-scenes fact about his unforgettable "Batman" score. Read More...

Last night's big debut of "The Avengers" cast (thus far) was clearly the highlight of this year's Comic-Con, but the actors portraying Marvel's team of mighty heroes weren't the only stars of the Marvel Studios panel. Joss Whedon's gig behind the camera as "The Avengers" director was also made official this weekend — and we made sure to ask "Captain America" lead Chris Evans about it when we snagged some time with him.

"It seems like [Whedon] knows the world incredibly well," Evans told MTV News. "It seems like this world respects him back. It seems like he's the guy for the job." Read More...

'Public Enemy'We've seen our share of comic books heroes make the jump from the four-color page to the silver screen over the years, but could we be on the verge of seeing a comic book enemy -- better yet, Public Enemy -- heading to the multiplex?

While we're not in the habit of breaking stories based on anonymous sources, a tipster dropped us a line recently and mentioned that the faces of the iconic rap crew -- Chuck D and Flavor Flav -- are in talks with a major animation studio to produce a feature film based on the band and their recent comic book exploits, with an all-new P.E. album being recorded for the movie. A second, very reliable source then backed up the original tipster's claim, stating a script is indeed in the works, adding, "The first 'Public Enemy' graphic novel collection comes out in May and there is a lot of interest from Hollywood." 'Watchmen'Short of a certain comic book icon threatening to "spit venom" all over the film, you'll be hard pressed to find anyone out there who isn't excited about the March 6 release of "Watchmen." And a major part of that excitement has to do with the Warner Bros. hype machine, offering us fans ridiculously cool viral videos and websites that give us a glimpse into what we can expect from Zack Snyder's take on the revolutionary graphic novel.

And the fine folks at Warner Bros. ain't letting up anytime soon, as today, they've announced the details on both the "Music From The Motion Picture 'Watchmen'" (which My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way recently spoke to MTV about contributing to) and the "'Watchmen' Original Motion Picture Score" soundtracks, as well as info for the upcoming "'Watchmen': The Complete Motion Comic" DVD and Blu-ray box sets. After the jump, we've got the rundown on all of this for those of you looking forward to watching -- and listening -- to the Watchmen. Read More...

Alicia KeysAt least according to her latest single, Alicia Keys is "Superwoman" -- "Still when I'm a mess, still I put on a vest, with an S on my chest, oh yes, I'm a superwoman," she sings.

And according to her video, superheroes don't need to have superpowers. A superwoman can be an astronaut. A businesswoman. A tribal Somali who supplies her family with fresh drinking water. Or even a welfare mom, taking care of two children but also going back to school. "She's a superwoman because it's hard to do all of those things," Keys previously told MTV News when we visited her on set of the video shoot. Read More...

August Burns RedIt's not even Thanksgiving and the hellions of Lancaster, Pennsylvania's August Burns Red are already decking the halls.

Just a few days after returning home from their 70-date, 18-country headlining tour, ABR's breakdown-infused cover of "Carol of the Bells" hit the 'net in a Christmas-themed commercial for Frank Miller's "The Spirit."

"It's an honor," said JB Brubaker, guitarist of August Burns Red, "This is not the kind of thing you expect to happen when you're practicing covers in your garage."

Being selected to promote such a highly anticipated (if hotly debated) film is no small feat for a band whose scream-heavy brand of metal isn't exactly created with commercial usage in mind -- especially since the song was chosen by Frank Miller himself from among a bevy of other holiday themed music submissions.

"We were sitting in a club in Prague in the Czech Republic when we heard the news," said Brubaker, "We were all just super stoked." Read More...
