Tune in to the 2012 MTV Movie Awards

Ever since the 2008 big-screen debut of "Iron Man," Marvel Studios has been building towards something. Followed by "The Incredible Hulk" in the same year, "Iron Man 2" in 2010, and "Thor" and "Captain America" in 2011, there were seeds carefully being planted, all suggesting an end goal of something bigger. That something is the feature film debut of "The Avengers," the superhero team which unites Marvel’s greatest heroes, in theaters right now. But the roots of the Avengers go a lot further back than 2008, and we’re going to take a look at the Avengers comic books published over nearly 50 years that have lent their influence to the making of the Avengers film.

WARNING: If you have not seen the film yet, you may want to hold off on reading this—there are MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD.

As hinted in the post-credits scene of Thor, the primary menace the Avengers have to contend with in their first outing is Loki (Tom Hiddleston), the Norse God of Evil. This echoes the founding of the team in 1963’s Avengers #1 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, where Loki is inadvertently responsible for the formation of the team. He attempts to lure his hated stepbrother Thor into a trap using the Hulk as his pawn, but succeeds in drawing the attention of the other heroes, who unite to defeat him.

One of the greatest accomplishments of "The Avengers" has to be that thrilling, extended final against Loki and his army. There is just so much going on, so many unforgettable moments, that we had to find out just how they pulled it off from the people behind the movie.

When MTV News spoke with Joss Whedon, he said that the final battle was the most challenging for him as a filmmaker. "The final battle is not small," he said, always a fan of the understatement. "It really was a task to make sure that everybody was working at their particular power level, and every now and then we had to adjust things because there are things that Cap can do Hawkeye can't, and Thor can do that Cap can't, and Hulk can do that Thor can't. You've just got to make sure that you stay true to their realities."

Brolin

For those of you still skeptical about Spike Lee's upcoming remake of "Oldboy," here's something that should assure you a bit: original director Park Chan-wook gave the movie his blessing.

At the junket for "Men in Black 3" (via /Film), leading man Josh Brolin was asked for his thoughts on "Oldboy." He admitted that it makes him "nervous," but he wouldn't have signed on board with without the South Korean director's stamp of approval.

"I love 'Oldboy' and I’m close with Chan-wook Park and I emailed him a couple months ago, just asking for his blessing to do this movie because if he had said ‘No,’ I wouldn't have done it," Brolin said. "But I really respect his movie and we’ll make a little different movie and this whole idea of a more Hollywood version of it? Whatever. We’re just going to make a different version but have respect to the initial story and premise. I’m looking forward to it, man. I’m talking about it nervously right now because it makes me nervous."

Amazing Spider-Man

"The Amazing Spider-Man" is in a bad way right now. With "The Avengers" hitting screens last night and "The Dark Knight Rises" poised to melt minds in July, the latest adventures of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has the highest mountain to climb of any of the superhero tent poles this year.

The combination Sam Raimi's trilogy still feeling fresh in the audience's memory and the so-so reception of the first person point-of-view in the teaser trailer immediately handicapped the reboot of Marvel's most recognizable hero.

But a new trailer over at iTunes shows off a bunch of new footage and more details about plot.

Avengers Poll

By now you're probably recovering from your midnight showing of the ultimate superhero event of the millennium, "The Avengers." Hopefully the coffee has started to kick in and you can finally process all of the awesome that you witnessed last night.

But what did you think? Did seeing Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk and Thor all together on the same screen do it for you? Was the Hulk everything that people hyped him up to be?

The majority of opinions out there for "The Avengers" certainly have been favoring the positive, lest Samuel L. Jackson lash out at you on Twitter. It seems like Joss Whedon and company have delivered on the hopes and dreams of every fanboy and fangirl out there.

If there's one bone to pick with "Marvel's The Avengers"—and "Thor" for that matter—it's that the involvement of Thor and Loki is pretty unfair for everyone else. They're demigods, for cryin' out loud.

It just seems like their powers should and would trump all others, no matter the atmospheric conditions or extenuating circumstances. But this is a question for someone with a more extensive Marvel knowledge base, like Tom Hiddleston for example, who unsurprisingly had a perfect explanation for why Loki and Thor are perfect fighting foils.

"I think [Loki's most formidable opponent] has to be Thor in every respect, because he's emotionally invested and so that's a weakness," Hiddleston said.

Avengers Feige

If there's a true superhero in the Marvel universe, it's got to be Kevin Feige.

The president of Marvel Studios sat down for a lengthy (and we mean lengthy) chat with Wired in anticipation of "The Avengers" hitting theaters tomorrow. We picked out some of the most interesting nuggets from the interview, but we highly recommend reading the full transcription.

S.H.I.E.L.D. Was An Afterthought
It turns out that Agent Coulson existed before the folks behind "Iron Man" even thought about introducing S.H.I.E.L.D. to the story. Feige and director Jon Favreau liked Clark Gregg's character so much that they decided they should give him something more to do.

"Tony's a big weapons industrialist, and we know that that would get the attention of the government. So we thought, 'Hey, we're the Marvel universe, can we use SHIELD?' Clark ended up doing such a great job that we wrote more and more scenes for him during production," Feige explained. "And either just before production or at some point during that I got a call from Sam Jackson’s agents, 'Hey, anything for Sam? He's a big fan, loves doing these movies.' So I asked, 'Why don't you check in with him, is there any chance he'd want to do a fun little cameo for us in this one?' He said yes."

With director Peter Berg making the media rounds in support of his upcoming summer blockbuster "Battleship," there's plenty of talk about the nuts and bolts of the action-packed blockbuster that isn't "Transformers at sea", but also a few updates about the other projects Berg has cookin', like "Hancock 2."

"There was a phone call. That’s movement. We had a phone call last week and [producer] Akiva [Goldsman] and Will Smith were on the phone. Everyone's got ideas, and everyone seems energized," Berg said.
