Cowboys & Aliens

Modern mainstream movie posters have long lacked the artistic aim of their vintage predecessors, and Mondo, an art house collecting different artists takes on pop culture posters, plays a part in changing that. Jon Favreau became a fan after working with Mondo on campaigns for "Iron Man" and had to have the collective on hand for his summer action flick “Cowboys & Aliens”.

In late July, Mondo released the first of four limited edition “Cowboys & Aliens” posters, featuring artists chosen by Favreau. Next week, the last poster will be released in celebration of the “Cowboys & Aliens” Extended Edition on Blu-ray Combo Pack. You can see it right now after the jump.

Looking for some reasons to go check out "Cowboys & Aliens" in theaters this weekend? Well, lucky for you, leading lady Olivia Wilde has a whole slew of them at the ready just for this moment.

MTV News caught up with the actress at the Montana junket for "Cowboys & Aliens" and asked her why she thinks her flick is the must-see summer blockbuster this season. Her answer? Because the cast is awesome and the story is original.

"We have so many amazing people," Wilde said. "We have Daniel Craig who's, I think, embodying Steve McQueen in this role. I think he's so badass it's unbelievable, and I think he's really, really smart and interesting in this role."

As enigmatic as the laser-packing Daniel Craig comes off in what fans have seen from Jon Favreau's upcoming "Cowboys & Aliens," the film's biggest mystery has to do with its extraterrestrials' as-yet unrevealed appearance.

MTV News caught a brief glimpse of the menace from space during the C&A panel at this past weekend's WonderCon 2011 in San Francisco and noted its at least passing resemblance to the rancor Luke faced beneath Jabba's palace in "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi." When presented with the good-natured comparison, Favreau agreed on a basic level, noting his team's intention to create an intimidating alien antagonist.

"Star Trek" news is usually the stuff of MTV Movies Blog, but we're making an exception today since this news in particular ties to "Cowboys & Aliens." The comic book adaptation's co-writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are also the writers on J.J. Abrams' reboot of "Trek" and its coming sequel, which is planned for a June 2012 release — and the duo recently revealed that there's a bigger tie between their work on the two projects than fans might realize.

"['Cowboys and Aliens'] inspires it a little bit," Orci said in an interview with Airlock Alpha. "'Star Trek' was 'Wagon Train [to] the Stars.' Isn't that how Gene Roddenberry pitched it? So right now we're just doing 'Stars Come to the Wagon Train' and now we start turning."

"Once we start relaxing about what were doing here, I'm hoping that being out in the woods a little bit will kind of inspire the right decisions hopefully," he added. Read More...

Cowboys & AliensComic book movie fans are in for a treat next summer with the arrival of "Cowboys & Aliens" from "Iron Man" director Jon Favreau. Given the familiar filmmaker's involvement, not to mention an impressive cast that includes Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Sam Rockwell and Olivia Wilde — and, obviously, the film title itself — is there really anything else you need to know about the movie ahead of time?

The answer, if you're confused, is no — but that doesn't make the first official poster for "Cowboys & Aliens" any less awesome.

Yahoo Movies has posted the very first poster from "Cowboys & Aliens," depicting an old Western hero (Craig) with his back turned to us, a rifle in one hand and a mysterious glowing wrist-mounted weapon on his other arm. In short, it's a perfect picture of Wild West badassery. Read More...

Director Jon Favreau has worked with some tremendously talented actors in his career – Robert Downey Jr. in the "Iron Man" films has to rank high on that list – but he's entering a truly elite area of fandom as Harrison Ford saddles up for "Cowboys & Aliens."

"Can you believe it? It's amazing," Favreau enthused when MTV's Josh Horowitz brought up the casting news in a recent interview. "I can't believe it still."

From the wise-cracking Han Solo to the whip-snapping Indiana Jones, Ford has played some indisputable badasses over the course of his acting career. But he's also tapped into his softer side in movies like "Regarding Henry" and even the recently released "Extraordinary Measures." Luckily, in "Cowboys & Aliens," Ford's character will have a lot more in common with his gruffer heroes of yesteryear. Read More...

Robert Downey Jr.It looks like the West will be won without “Iron Man 2” and “Sherlock Holmes” star Robert Downey Jr.

According to a report in the Los Angeles Times, Downey has left the sci-fi Western “Cowboys & Aliens” behind and is rumored to be moving on to a potential “Sherlock Holmes” sequel. However, Jon Favreau will remain with the film as the director and production is expected to begin later this year for a summer 2011 release date.

Downey had been expected to portray Zeke Jackson, a gunslinger who rallies a group of cowboys and Apache Indians when aliens invade Arizona during the mid-19th century. Read More...
