Sometimes a superhero isn't lucky enough to have superpowers, but hey, it never stopped Batman. Even those fortunate enough to have a few tricks up their mythical alloy sleeves can use the help of a great gadget once in a while.

This year's comic books movies were filled with amazing gadgets, doohickeys and thingamabobs that gave their respective superheroes or villains the extra boost they needed. Here's a look at the top five comic book movie gadgets from 2011.

Cowboys & Aliens

Modern mainstream movie posters have long lacked the artistic aim of their vintage predecessors, and Mondo, an art house collecting different artists takes on pop culture posters, plays a part in changing that. Jon Favreau became a fan after working with Mondo on campaigns for "Iron Man" and had to have the collective on hand for his summer action flick “Cowboys & Aliens”.

In late July, Mondo released the first of four limited edition “Cowboys & Aliens” posters, featuring artists chosen by Favreau. Next week, the last poster will be released in celebration of the “Cowboys & Aliens” Extended Edition on Blu-ray Combo Pack. You can see it right now after the jump.

Cowboys & Aliens

In what can only be described as a shocking instance of candidness, Universal chief Ron Meyer spoke to a crowd at the Savannah Film Festival and skewered several of the studio's most recent big-budget flops, as well as discussing why those films just didn't work.

As he explained it: "We make a lot of sh---y movies. Every one of them breaks my heart."

During his talk at the festival, Meyer opened up about a number of recent Universal titles. Movieline was there and asked him specifically about the critically and financially underwhelming comic book adaptation "Cowboys & Aliens" and the poorly-received "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World."

Cowboys and AliensFROM MTV MOVIES: Industry watchers predicted that "Cowboys & Aliens" would easily top the box office over the weekend. But not so fast, partners! It wasn't little green men who fought hardest against Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford's cowboys, but rather little blue woodland creatures.

"The Smurfs" finished neck-and-neck with the Jon Favreau-directed sci-fi Western with an estimated $36.2 million opening per movie at press time, tying the flicks at #1 for their respective debuts. "Captain America: The First Avenger" settled for #3 in its second weekend of release with $24.9 million. Its 10-day $116.8 million total is less than Marvel's "Thor" had earned in the same period but still a better second-week performance than "Green Lantern."

"Cowboys & Aliens" might have Jon Favreau's name on the billing as director, but the movie certainly has other strong filmmaker's influences on it as well.

When MTV News caught up with Favreau at the "Cowboys & Aliens" junket in Montana, he said that he gained a lot of the inspiration for the creatures in the movie from the alien films he loved as a kid. So if you see some "Alien," "Aliens" and "Predator" references in the creature design, then don't be alarmed.

All the effort was spent in the attempt to not make "Cowboys & Aliens" feel like a one-joke movie. Favreau said he wanted to make sure that the approach they took on the flick worked for its entirety, which meant figuring out what type of alien movie they wanted to make and what type of cowboy movie.

Cowboys & Aliens"Cowboys & Aliens," the big-budget blockbuster film starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, hits theaters today. Many fans are likely aware that the film has been billed as based on a graphic novel, like so many other recent blockbusters. But what they may not be aware of is just how tangled and torturous a path it was for "Cowboys & Aliens" to reach the big-screen, and how very different its origins are from other comic book films.

To shed some light on that, we're taking a look at the trail this property blazed all the way to the Wild West of Hollywood.

"Cowboys & Aliens" gallops into theaters this weekend chased by an armada of gold seeking monsters from space. On the surface, all the ingredients are in place for an all-out wall-to-wall actioner for the books: the director of "Iron Man," the stars of "James Bond" and "Indiana Jones," and a seemingly impossible mash-up of genres. Nothing could possibly go wrong there, right?

Make no mistake, there's a lot to juggle in "Cowboys," and Jon Favreau's task is not an enviable one — so how did he hold up under the pressure? Your mileage may vary, but for this movies writer, I walked away quite pleased with the wild, wild west's suddenly slick space-born sheen.

Check out five reasons you should see "Cowboys" past the jump!

This weekend sees the theatrical release of “Cowboys & Aliens,” in which action-adventure legend Harrison Ford gets back into the saddle as the hard nosed Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde. The star of the original “Star Wars” trilogy and the “Indiana Jones” series recently spoke with MTV News about his character’s wardrobe, and a specific piece of neckwear in particular.

“We don’t call it an ascot, we call it a scarf,” the actor explained. “They were a common feature of a cattleman’s wardrobe, because they could be used to cover your face in a dust storm, or mop your brow or tie around your neck to absorb sweat.”

Tomorrow sees the release of one of the summer’s biggest movies, “Cowboys & Aliens.” Starring Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde, helmed by “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau, and based on a comic book, the movie has an impeccable pedigree, and also boasts a winking reference to an earlier, much-beloved action flick.

In trailers for “Cowboys & Aliens,” Craig’s character is seen jumping from a galloping horse, a scene many fans have pegged as reminiscent of a similar set piece in “Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.” But while it might look like Craig made the daring leap, the truth is somewhat different.

FROM MTV MOVIES: Olivia Wilde might have been covered in dust and dirt while shooting "Cowboys & Aliens," but that didn't make shooting a mostly nude scene in front of her co-star Daniel Craig any less awkward.

"It was kind of strange because I was half-naked in front of a bunch of people, including the crew, a bunch of Apache warriors, a bunch of cowboys, and Daniel Craig, who I had to stand in front of basically naked," Wilde explained to MTV News. "He had to take a moment to sort of look me up and down before covering me in a blanket. And I was like, this is crazy."

It didn't help that after the long night of shooting, Wilde and the rest of the "Cowboys & Aliens" cast had to take an overnight flight to San Diego Comic-Con to make their Hall H presentation. So if fans remember her being a little frazzled, it probably has something to do with the fact Wilde had no sleep after filming a scene in which she was partially nude for the majority of it.
