Each time the topic of a follow-up to "X-Men: First Class" comes up, everyone seems eager to do it. Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy have both opened up about collaborating on ideas. Now top Fox exec Tom Rothman says that he wants it to happen: "We're trying like hell. We're trying as hard as we can. We really want to do it. We're planning to do it."

MTV News caught up with Rothman at the Gotham Independent Film Awards, and they spoke about the prospects continuing that series and how its success has changed how the studio approaches superhero movies.

"The reason, in addition to those two guys and Matthew Vaughn, that it was as good as it was that the script was really good," Rothman said. "The key to making a great continuing franchise is to have a great script, so we're working hard on it."

Coward

Ed Brubaker has a new writing task on his hands: adapting “Coward,” the first part of his “Criminal” series, for the big screen. Hunting Lane Films, which has made “Sugar” and “Half Nelson,” has acquired rights to the work and has already set up “Eclipse” director David Slade to direct the movie.

Brubaker spoke to Variety about the situation, describing the Marvel-published story of “Coward” this way: “It's a heist story, partly -- it's a lot of different crime stories wrapped in one, but heist stories are always exciting if they're pulled off correctly."

X-Men First ClassThis summer's comic book movie roster already promised to be a good one, but early buzz on "X-Men: First Class" seems to be getting better and better. That's more than can be said for the 3-D films in the minds of the comics folks in our feed. Even David Slade is bashing the medium.

Brian Michael Bendis, meanwhile, just wants his movies to have an infected zone somewhere in the plot. His explanation, a description of Tony Harris' new Starman tattoo and a "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" trailer reaction all made the rundown this morning.

I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter Report for May 31, 2011. Read More...

DESCIt was big news when we learned Darren Aronofsky would no longer be directing “The Wolverine,” and now the floodgates are open with talk and rumors of who might replace him in the director's chair.

Nothing is official yet, but Deadline is reporting that they've heard David Slade and Duncan Jones' names as potential replacements for Aronofsky. Slade's a very familiar name on the comic book circuit, having directed "30 Days of Night" and recently being named as the “Daredevil” pseudo-sequel's director.

Jones, meanwhile, directed “Moon” and the just-released “Source Code,” and was once rumored to direct "Superman" before Zack Snyder snagged the job.

The WolverineNow that Darren Aronofsky is no longer directing "The Wolverine," the field is wide open for another filmmaker interested in tackling Logan's second solo adventure.

Way back in September 2010, before Aronofsky was confirmed for the gig, we suggested five directors we thought would be good for the project (he was one of them). In the months that since, we've learned more about the film and, well... let's just say it's time to revise our list.

After much debate around Splash Page HQ, we've come up with a list of five filmmakers we'd like to see behind the camera when Wolverine heads to Japan. Read More...

Last week was an emotional roller-coaster here on MTV Splash Page. On one hand, you had the devastating news that Darren Aronofsky stepped away from directing "The Wolverine." And on the other, David Slade, a former front-runner for the "Wolverine" gig, signed on to direct a new Daredevil movie.

While the original report described Slade's movie as "a continuation of the saga," that may not actually be the case.

The director took to Twitter over the weekend with a series of updates on "Daredevil" and other projects. In one particularly telling post, he writes, "It will [bear] no relation to the previous Daredevil movie in any way. We are at early planning stages and have not yet discussed any cast." Last week, a rumor that named "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson among the contenders for the lead role in David Slade's upcoming "Daredevil" pseudo-sequel caused no small amount of buzz around the online world.

When MTV News spoke to the "Water For Elephants" actor as part of this weekend's live, streaming "MTV First: Robert Pattinson" interview, we made sure to ask him about the rumor pegging him as a potential Matt Murdock.

"I don't know where that one came from at all," said Pattinson of the rumor. Read More...

Wolverine - DaredevilWhat started out as a slow week in the comic book movie world picked up quite a bit of speed in the last 48 hours, with David Slade named as director for a "Daredevil" pseudo-sequel, and Darren Aronofsky announcing his departure from "The Wolverine." And while much remains uncertain about both of these high-profile projects, the convergence of these two items got us thinking around Splash Page HQ, and we ended up with a modest proposal.

It's pretty simple, really: Darren Aronofsky and David Slade should switch movies, with the former directing the "Daredevil" movie and the latter taking on "The Wolverine."

Why? Well, not only does it make sense stylistically, but it works out quite nicely on the logistics side, too. Just hear me out on this, okay? Read More...

By and large, fans were unimpressed with Mark Steven Johnson's 2003 adaptation of the Marvel Comics series "Daredevil" for 20th Century Fox. While it was a masterpiece compared to the "Elektra" spin-off that followed, it still fell short of expectations.

Fox has held onto the rights since then by keeping a follow-up in development, and now momentum is building for another adventure with the blind lawyer/vigilante superhero, to be helmed by "30 Days of Night" director David Slade.

Slade will work on what sources tell Variety is "a continuation of the 'Daredevil' saga," picking up after the events of the 2003 film, which starred Ben Affleck. The sequel-not-reboot status is further confirmed by Deadline, though no further information than that is revealed. A writer has not been hired, but the person will reportedly "work closely" with Slade on developing the story. Read More...

Wolverine 2Over the past few months, some very interesting names have popped up as possible directors for "X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2," including "Red" director Robert Schwentke and "Black Swan" filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. But there's one rumored contender that many people believe to be the frontrunner: "Eclipse" and "30 Days of Night" director David Slade.

Adding to the buzz is the fact that Slade isn't exactly denying rumors of his involvement. The director spoke with the Vancouver Sun and said that while he's not officially on board for "Wolverine 2," he's already taken a meeting with the film's most important player.

"I can say that I’ve met with Hugh Jackman and he is a very nice fellow, but you never know with these things," said Slade. "There are several projects I’m interested in now, and that’s one of them." Read More...
