If ever you wondered why massively multiplayer online games are all going free-to-play, look no further than "DC Universe Online." The previously subscription-only game just recently opened up to all us freeloaders, and by Green Arrow's beard, has this game suddenly taken off with a fury. Just one week into the new tiered structure and over one million new players hopped aboard.

Sony Online Entertainment are obviously more than a little enthused with the sudden onslaught of new players. It's not immediately clear how those million people are split between the game's three options of pay, but it's a staggering number that apparently covers both platform options.

DC Universe

The standard subscription model for massively multiplayer online games is going the way of the dinosaur. Over the past year, nearly every such videogame in the genre has dropped their monthly fees in favor of the new free-to-play, or "freemium" model. Maybe it's because of the rough economy, maybe it's because of the staggering success of casual behemoths like "Farmville," but whatever the reason, there's a whole lot of free online gaming waiting out there for you.

While Sony Online Entertainment had previously mentioned that their DC Comics-inspired online role-playing game, "DC Universe Online," was also removing a required monthly fee, it wasn't immediately clear when that would start. Apparently, it's really soon. Like next week soon.

DC Universe OnlineFor fans of video games based on comic book properties, 2010 wasn't exactly a busy year. After "Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions," the only other major release scheduled for the year was "DC Universe Online," Sony Online Entertainment's upcoming game that allows players to create their own heroes or villains and interact with Superman, Batman, and the rest of DC's stable of characters.

All that changed last month, though, when "DC Universe" was pushed back to a 2011 release date. Citing a need to "address community feedback in a meaningful way," Sony delayed the release of the much-anticipated MMORPG and has yet to announce a new date for the game to hit shelves.

I recently spoke to veteran comic book artist and DC Comics co-publisher Jim Lee, who also serves as Executive Creative Director for "DC Universe Online," and got some details about the delay — as well as some interesting thoughts on how the DCUO team developed the in-game look for popular characters. DC Universe OnlineAlthough players can't assume the roles of the greatest superheroes and villains that the DC Universe has to offer in "DC Universe Online," the forthcoming video game is providing them with the next best thing: a talented voice cast that includes the venerable Wil Wheaton.

The "Star Trek" and "Big Bang Theory" star joins the growing voice cast for "DC Universe Online," the upcoming MMORPG from Sony Online Entertainment. Sony announced Wheaton's casting in a press release, alongside other new voice actors including Corey Burton as Brainiac and Dwight Schultz as The Flash. Wheaton will provide the voice of Robin.

Additionally, Arleen Sorkin is once again reprising her role as Harley Quinn, having previously voiced the character in "Batman: The Animated Series" and "Batman: Arkham Asylum," among other projects. Read More...

A new trailer for "DC Universe Online," Sony's upcoming multiplayer online adventure that unfolds within DC's world of heroes and villains, has hit the 'Net.

Titled "Acrophobia," the new trailer debuted during this week's Gamescom 2010 convention in Germany. Check out the trailer and you'll see why it earned that title — as well as some new footage featuring Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and a host of other DC regulars. Read More...

Lex Luthor looked like a clear villain when he showed up in a trailer for "DCU Universe Online" during E3 in June, but a new glimpse titled "Who Do You Trust?" makes him look like he could be trying to save the world.

It also makes Superman look like he's faster than The Flash, which should be fun for DC readers to analyze. Read More...

The annual gaming mecca E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) is in full swing in Los Angeles right now, and while our colleagues at Multiplayer are on the floor bringing their gaming-savvy readers updates from the show, here's one item that should be particularly interesting for comic fans: the world premiere of the "DC Universe Online" game trailer.

Written by a comics dream team that includes such veterans as Jim Lee, Geoff Johns and Marv Wolfman, "DC Universe Online" is a massive, online multiplayer game featuring a large stable of DC's best-known heroes and villains interacting with user-created, superpowered characters. Read More...

'DC Universe Online'FROM MULTIPLAYER BLOG: Last week, I spoke to comics writer Marv Wolfman about his involvement in the DC Comics MMO “DC Universe Online.” (I did so after giving him grief about how he brought Optimus Prime back to life in less than stellar fashion back in the 80s — I’ll get into that later). Wolfman is a highly-regarded veteran comics writer whose most famous work is the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” mini-series that re-booted the DC Universe in the mid-80s.

Here’s what I learned about his involvement in the game and how the story is taking shape.

When I spoke to him, Wolfman hadn’t worked with the developers yet. What he had done is absorbed the high-end master-story for the game, which had been cooked up by fellow comics writer Geoff Johns. Wolfman was brought in to turn Johns’ story into actual missions.

'Wonder Woman'FROM MULTIPLAYER: When I spoke with Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley last year, I asked if the company had any plans to make their MMOs more appealing to female players. He said, “We are going out of our way in ‘DC Universe Online’ because we saw that women were really the largest part of the audience for ‘The Dark Knight‘ [movie].”

Certainly the publicity and the widespread acclaim surrounding the latest Batman film couldn’t hurt, but creative director Jens Andersen and senior producer Wes Yanagi told me some specifics of how their game will appeal to the ladies.

AquamanFROM MULTIPLAYER: The creative director of upcoming MMORPG “DC Universe Online” insisted that Aquaman, perhaps the most mocked superhero in history, is a “badass,” but no swimming powers are in the game “at the moment.”

During a demo of “DC Universe Online” yesterday in a midtown Manhattan hotel, I spoke with the game’s creative director Jens Andersen about making the highly anticipated superhero MMO. One of the DC characters we talked about was Aquaman; the undersea superhero is often mocked for simply being a dude who can talk to fish. But he’s much more, said Andersen.
