G.I. Joe CobraFor decades now, Hasbro's "G.I. Joe" brand has been one of the great cross-media success stories, with popular toy lines, television series, comic books, and even a recent, live-action, blockbuster film. While the stable of G.I. Joe characters has grown over the years, the basic formula has remained largely the same: G.I. Joe are the good guys, Cobra are the bad guys, and Cobra Commander is the baddest of the bad guys.

All that changes, however, with this week's issue of IDW Publishing's "G.I. Joe: Cobra" #12.

SPOILER WARNING: If you haven't read the issue yet (and plan to), you might want to check it out, find out what happens, and then come back for the rest of this story. After all, knowing is half the battle. Read More...

Mystery character?Looks like it's time to flex your comics cred, folks. IDW Publishing dropped a mysterious image on us last night, and challenged Splash Page readers to guess the character featured in the design sketches.

"We thought we would get things started with a little guessing game — as in, guess who this is," teased the accompanying message. "It's a character from a series that's starting this month."

One of the most obvious clues regarding the character's identity is the red lapel pin that seems to be the logo for C.O.B.R.A., the sworn enemies of G.I. Joe. Could it be a new Cobra Commander? Could the pin be a red herring? Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think! Read More...

G.I. JoeMany folks knew G.I. Joe from the toys and the cartoon. The cartoon series was fun, but let's face it — it was also pretty cheesy. After all, how do you take a series about counter-terrorists seriously when no one ever gets hurt and the guns only shoot little beams of light that always seem to miss?

The "G.I. Joe" comics, on the other hand, have always been a horse of a different color, delving into darker themes and with a more serious tone of military life and espionage. And they’ve been around longer than you may think.

So, with "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" hitting theaters this weekend, let’s take a look at the history of G.I. Joe in comics. Read More...

G.I. JoeFrom 1982 to 1994, Marvel Comics’ “G.I. Joe” series chronicled the adventures of an elite group of American soldiers and combatants as they fought against terrorist organizations such as the sinister Cobra organization. With nearly every issue written by Larry Hama (longtime writer of “Wolverine”), the comic hosted an ensemble cast of heroes and villains with stories that ran from political allegory to high-stakes sci-fi adventure.

In honor of today's premiere of "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," here are some of our favorite stories from the original "G.I. Joe" comic book series.

"G.I. JOE" #4: “Operation: Wingfield!” — G.I. Joe soldiers Snake-Eyes, Hawk and Grunt are sent to infiltrate Cobra’s new First Strike task force. To their shock, they learn that Cobra has gotten ahold of two nuclear bombs and First Strike intends to use them to start a war between Russia and the USA. What follows is tense and desperate action as the Joes try to prevent World War III.

This story is also significant due to a scene in which the mute Snake Eyes writes down his thoughts, giving us a rare glimpse into his mind. Read More...

Joe: A Real American Hero" fans interested -- a new comic book series penned by Max Brooks.

IDW has announced that former "Saturday Night Live" scribe and author of zombie survival tome "World War Z" is writing an upcoming five-issue "G.I. Joe" miniseries due out next year. Read More...

Earlier today, we gave you a peek at the "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" clip that aired during the MTV Movie Awards, but now the full clip is up on MTV.com. Since I know we have some "G.I. Joe" fans here on Splash Page, here's all the footage that aired during the show tonight:

Featuring Channing Tatum (Duke), Sienna Miller (Baroness), Byung-hun Lee (Storm Shadow) and Marlon Wayans (Ripcord), the new footage not only shows off the actors playing the "Real American Heroes," but also some of the vehicles that were such a big part of the G.I. Joe toy line. Well, not these vehicles, exactly -- but you get the idea.

What do you think of the new clip? Sound off in the comment section!

Marlon WayansFROM MOVIES BLOG: When the “G.I. Joe” live-action movie finally got a greenlight after more than a decade in development, fans of the series seemed to have two main concerns: That they’d mess up the look of the beloved characters, and that Marlon Wayans would be cracking too many jokes. And while I haven’t got much evidence to shoot down that first fear, I can tell you when we recently caught up with Marlon, he insisted that “The Rise of Cobra” kept his “Little Man” hijinks in check.

“The movie is serious, action and some comedy - but not all comedy,” insisted the star, who will bring an extremely different look to the High Altitude Low Opening jumper in the August 7th flick. “You pull off the reigns; I did what was appropriate for the role and for the character.”

'GI Joe'With a live-action "G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra" movie on the way, "G.I. Joe" comics publisher IDW announced this week that several "Joe"-related miniseries will be extended. The "Joe" publisher also gave Splash Page readers the first peek at cover art for two upcoming issues.
