Last we heard from "Avatar" director James Cameron, his planned film based on Yukito Kishiro's "Battle Angel Alita" manga hadn't progressed very far, but he had some big ideas about the visual effects needed to bring to life the story of a rescued robotic warrior and her quest for redemption.

While his producing partner Jon Landau previously indicated that "Alita" would follow an "Avatar" sequel in their to-do list, Cameron told MTV News recently that the adaptation might not be as far off as that. In fact, it might happen before "Avatar 2."

"They're both possible projects," Cameron said of "Alita" and "The Dive," another effects-heavy film that's been on his radar for years. "I'm sort of weighing this constellation of really cool things I want to do." Read More...

With reports circulating that Bryan Singer is no longer a lock to direct "X-Men: First Class," it's well worth wondering who could replace him.

The possibility of Singer's departure due to other cinematic commitments comes with a silver lining, as Fox has reportedly met with two big-name replacement directors that are well-loved and recognizable amongst comic book and geek genre fans. Hopefully, that also means the directors being approached are actually right for the job — that they have some connection to the "X-Men" material or the core premise of powerful youths discovering how to effectively use their abilities for the first time.

If Singer really is leaving the franchise, these five directors could provide a unique take on the youthful "X-Men" spinoff. Read More...

Two of the last three films Jon Landau has produced have become the highest-grossing films of all time. So when the guys speaks, smart people tend to listen.

Nowadays, Landau is speaking loud and clear about his Oscar hopes for “Avatar,” the potential "Avatar" sequel and a possible "Avatar" prequel for James Cameron’s hugely-successful movie — but the project he deems to be the next blockbuster Landau/Cameron franchise is “Battle Angel: Alita.”

When he stopped by our studios, Landau gave us an update on the long-gestating project, revealing that he’s determined to get Cameron to change the title to "Alita" first and foremost. But, after telling us that screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis had opened the duo’s eyes to all nine books in the series, Landau said the biggest obstacle now is figuring out which tales to tell from Yukito Kishiro’s manga series. Battle Angel AlitaRemember the good old days of 2005? MySpace was taking over the Internet, Mel Gibson was unleashing R-rated tirades that weren’t in any film script — and some long-forgotten hermit named James Cameron was making public appearances, claiming he had two boundary-breaking projects on the horizon.

Well, as it turns out, he was right — and choosing “Avatar” as the first of the two films to make seems pretty damn brilliant in retrospect. But what about the other movie?

“'Avatar' was something Jim had written before, but we were about to embark on a film called ‘Battle Angel: Alita,’ and then we looked at ourselves and said ‘Wait a second, ‘Avatar’ is something that Jim always referred to as his magnum opus, and we can do it now,’” remembered the filmmaker’s producing partner, Jon Landau. “But [‘Battle Angel’] is something that Jim is very, very passionate about. It was actually brought to our attention by another filmmaker, Guillermo del Toro; Guillermo saw those things in the property that he thought would really relate to Jim, and Jim responded to it immediately.” Read More...

As some of you following MTV Splash Page on Twitter already know, "Avatar" director James Cameron made a somewhat unexpected visit to the MTV Newsroom yesterday to discuss his record-breaking 3-D epic. Of course, while he was here, we had to follow-up with him about his "Avatar" co-producer Jon Landau's assertion that the pair had met with newly appointed "Spider-Man" director Marc Webb about Sony's plans to film the reboot using 3-D technology.

"I didn't talk to him directly," clarified Cameron. "I'm more than happy to. I'm more than happy to talk to any filmmaker who wants to author their picture in 3-D." Read More...

Spider-ManFollowing the smash success of “Avatar,” James Cameron is Hollywood’s new guru of greatness. It’s no surprise, then, that filmmakers looking to master the complexities of 3-D, science-fiction and state-of-the-art special effects are seeking him out for guidance as if he were a bearded man sitting atop a mountain.

Now, in a new development that should thrill fans of our friendly neighborhood webslinger, MTV News has learned the name of the latest filmmaker to meet with Cameron: "Spider-Man" director Marc Webb.

“Last [week] we met the director of [the next ‘Spider-Man’ film],” Cameron’s producing partner Jon Landau revealed to us when he stopped by the MTV studio, explaining that the “Avatar” filmmaker and Spider-Man’s new gatekeeper compared notes Wednesday evening. “[Webb] wants to do the next one in 3-D, which they’ve announced that they want to do. So, we want to try to support that as much as possible.” Read More...

You can cross one name off the list of potential "Spider-Man" directors, because James Cameron isn't interested.

Speaking with MTV News at the Critics Choice Awards red carpet, the "Avatar" director denied rumors that he was in the running to direct Sony's next "Spider-Man" movie and kick off a brand new franchise for the Marvel Comics superhero.

"No, no," Cameron told MTV News when asked if he'd been approached for the "Spider-Man" job. "It's a little bit sloppy seconds, let's face it." Read More...

Spider-ManIt looks like we were relatively spot-on with our picks for a "Spider-Man" director, as three of our five suggestions are now being rumored as top contenders to bring your friendly neighborhood webslinger back to the big screen. However, one of them — "500 Days of Summer" director Marc Webb — looks to be the favorite.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Sony's current director wishlist includes Webb, James Cameron ("Avatar"), David Fincher ("Zodiac"), and Wes Anderson ("Rushmore"). The site claims that Webb has already met with producers and studio execs about the "Spider-Man" reboot, and the plan is to get the film into production this year for a 2012 release. The long production time will allow the studio to film in 3-D.

Spider-ManNow that Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire have officially departed the "Spider-Man" franchise, it's well worth pondering who the next director and lead actor to join the property are going to be.

While "Spider-Man 3" certainly suffered its fair share of criticism, the combination of Raimi and Maguire won over the majority of fans in the initial two installments. Finding adequate replacements isn't good enough — Sony needs to find the best of the best.

For now, let's focus on the director's chair. Raimi's shoes are big ones to fill — he brought the indie sensibilities of his "Evil Dead" days to "Spider-Man," offering a unique take on the character and his world that no other director could replicate. Given that, a drastically different approach is a must, but not one lacking in the same kind of quality. These five directors could go a long way towards taking the "Spider-Man" franchise in a bold new direction. Read More...
