By now it's pretty much a given that "Jonah Hex" will go down as the worst of this year's movies based on comic book properties — and there's an argument to be made that it's one of the worst comic book movies of all time (it's certainly on my list).

Previously, actor Josh Brolin conceded that when it comes to the troubled film based on DC's scarred bounty hunter, he's not proud of "Jonah Hex." However, the project naturally came up in conversation while Brolin made the press rounds for another Western he's starring in these days: "True Grit."

"It is," laughed Brolin when asked if this Western is better than "Jonah Hex." "It didn't need to be, but it is." Read More...

Thomas JaneOne of my favorite actors in the biz these days, "Hung" star Thomas Jane never shies away from talking comics and comic book movies when I interview him. That didn't change when I spoke with him about the upcoming double-screening of "Dark Country," his noir-fueled directorial debut, at Long Beach Comic Con.

The film will receive two 3-D screenings this weekend, including a Saturday night screening with commentary from director and star Jane, production designer Tim Bradstreet (no stranger to the comics world there, either), and Ray Zone, the 3-D supervisor on the film. While we discussed "Dark Country" at length during the conversation, we also spent a little while chatting about past, present, and future comic book movies and his take on where the genre is headed.

"I think I dodged a bullet there," said Jane of "Jonah Hex," this year's critically panned live-action film based on DC's scarred bounty hunter. Originally rumored as a contender for the lead role, Jane confirmed that he read an early script and would've loved to star in a "Jonah Hex" movie — "but not the one that they did." Read More...

We knew to temper our expectations for "Jonah Hex" when star Josh Brolin began hyping its "absurdist tone," but let me be honest here for a sec: it's currently sitting somewhere alongside "Catwoman" and "Elektra" in my list of some of the worst comic book movies ever made. The horse-mounted gatling gun gives it an edge over the other two films, but only a slight edge.

And while I know I'm not alone in having some negative feelings about the film, it's vindicating to know that even the film's star struggled to find something positive to say about the project.

"Now that I don't have to promote it? . . . No," said Brolin when asked if he was proud of "Jonah Hex." Read More...

"Batman: Under The Red Hood" hits shelves later this month on DVD and Blu-Ray, featuring the animated adaptation of a story written by Judd Winick. Like previous DC animated films before it, "Under The Red Hood" will be accompanied by an animated short film based on a lesser-known character's from the publisher's stable — in this case, the scarred Western anti-hero Jonah Hex.

"Punisher" actor Thomas Jane voices Hex in the animated short, which you can get your first, exclusive look at here on Splash Page!

Longtime readers will remember that Jane campaigned for the role of Hex in the live-action film based on the character— a role that eventually went to Josh Brolin. Would Jane have made a better Hex? "DC Showcase: Jonah Hex" could be our best way to find out. Read More...

In the first "Jonah Hex" trailer, there's one particular item that should give fans a pretty clear sense of whether or not this comic book adaptation is something they'll find interest in. I'm speaking, of course, about the horse-mounted gatling gun, one of the most absurd pieces of weaponry seen on film in the past several years. It's not a concept that everybody can get behind — but it's certainly one that lead actor Josh Brolin was very amused by!

"The gatling gun, man," the actor laughed when MTV News asked him to recount his favorite and most absurd weapons featured in "Jonah Hex." "It's not funny to anybody else, but it's always funny to me." Read More...

Jonah Hex is a lot of things. He's a killer, an alcoholic, abusive, stubborn, the list goes on — but could he also be a healthy alternative to smoking?

During an interview with MTV News, "Jonah Hex" star Josh Brolin explained why playing DC's scarred bounty hunter forced him to quit his smoking habit cold turkey (among other less-helpful effects).

"It was hard, because I couldn't eat," Brolin told MTV News. "Because I had the mouthpiece in, I couldn't eat for 14-15 hours a day. I had three layers of prosthetics on, I had layers of wool on my body, I had boots that made my feet so swollen that every morning I'd get up and look like Quasimodo trying to get to the bathroom." Jonah Hex: No Way BackJust when you thought the Western had hung up its guns, "Jonah Hex" arrives in theaters this weekend.

While "Hex" stars Josh Brolin and Megan Fox are hoping the big-screen debut of DC's scarred bounty hunter does well enough to merit another whiskey-swigging adventure, comic book readers know that Jonah Hex has been kicking ass and slinging a six-shooter for nearly four decades now — and he's not alone. The western hero is not only alive and well in the comic world, there's a multitude of characters and stories to choose from, depending on your personal tastes.

Jonah Hex"Jonah Hex" stars Josh Brolin and Megan Fox were just two of the stars making an appearance on the red carpet when DC's scarred bounty hunter made his big-screen debut in L.A. this week.

The aforementioned pair were joined by a guest list that included everyone from Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren to heavy-metal rockers Mastodon (how's that for an after-party crowd?), and MTV News managed to snag some photos from the event.

While I'm a little disappointed that Brolin didn't show up on the back of a horse fitted with gatling guns, it looks like there was lots of fun to be had at the "Jonah Hex" premiere — even without dynamite. Read More...

It's no secret that "Jonah Hex" has followed a rough road to the big screen, with changes in directors, much-publicized script revisions, significant tonal shifts, and even a final round of re-shoots before finally making it to theaters.

However, star Josh Brolin has been with the project from the start, so when MTV News sat down with him during the "Jonah Hex" press junket, we had to ask: Is he happy with the final cut of the film?

"Extremely," said Brolin, who admitted that the film "went through a lot of manifestations of what this was going to be, especially in [post-production]." Read More...

Jonah HexEDITOR'S NOTE: With "Jonah Hex" hitting theaters this weekend, I enlisted longtime "Jonah Hex" comics co-writer Jimmy Palmiotti to share his thoughts on why the character has endured in comics and pop culture for so many decades. -RM

Justin Gray and I have been writing the monthly "Jonah Hex" comic book for DC Comics for over five years now, and its still going strong. A lot of people ask us what the appeal of the character is to readers, and I like to think the appeal happens on a number of levels — some not so obvious.

With the series published now, each and every issue is drawn by the greats in the comic industry, and these stories are told in single-issue fashion, so non-readers can pick up any issue and get brought up to date about the who, what, and where of the character. But when a person looks at a drawing, the brain decides in a split second whether the image is of interest to them — like it or don’t like it, cool or not cool. One look at Jonah Hex and most people think, “Ew, what the hell happened to his face?” This is soon followed by “But he does look cool,” and finally, “What's he about?”

And it's that last stage where the story comes in. Read More...
