Castle

by Ethan Kaye

Comic books weave threads through all popular media. What once lived in attics and dingy strip mall stores are now headlining box offices, Broadway stages, and magazine covers. So how far do these tentacles stretch? This column looks at what’s popular, and uncovers some of the hidden connections to the comic world!

This week: “Castle!” When best-selling mystery author Richard Castle runs into a bout of writer’s block, he does what any writer does: goes into the field and shadows a real cop, Kate Beckett. His writing takes on a new life, as he gets dragged into case after case by his “partner.” The best part? Actual novels by “Richard Castle” are available at bookstores. And not just books – comics!

Green Lantern

If you’ve ever reminisced about the “Justice League” TV show and thought “Gosh, wouldn’t it be cool if the original voice cast reunited for another awesome JL project?” – then we’ve got news for you. Kevin Conroy (Batman), Michael Rosenbaum (Flash), Susan Eisenberg (Wonder Woman) and Carl Lumbly (J’onn J’onzz/Martian Manhunter) will all be reprising their roles in a new DC Universe animated movie, “Justice League: Doom.”

But it gets better: joining the original group will be Tim Daly, the voice of Superman, and current geek god Nathan Fillion, in his new gig as the animated Green Lantern (first seen in the recent release “Green Lantern: Emerald Nights”).

CastleWe might not get to see Nathan Fillion suit up as Green Lantern, Hawkeye, or any of the other comic book characters we keep suggesting him for, but it looks like he'll get a different sort of crossover with the comics world in the near future.

Announced via press release today, Marvel Entertainment and ABC Studios are partnering to publish a graphic novel based on "Castle," the hit television series in which Fillion plays celebrated mystery author Richard Castle. The graphic novel will be titled "Castle: Richard Castle’s Deadly Storm," and feature the protagonist of Richard Castle's novels, Derrick Storm.

And while that might be an appealing prospect to "Castle" fans (and Nathan Fillion fans), comic fans should note the pedigree of the project's creative team, too. Veteran writer Brian Michael Bendis will co-script the book with Kelly Sue DeConnick ("Captain America And The Secret Avengers"), while "Fables" artist Lan Medina handles the interior art. Angry BirdsUnhappy with the advertisements that have been showing up while you play "Angry Birds"? It sounds like you have a friend in Nathan Fillion, as he's been writing out some formal tweets to the game's makers complaining about what's been appearing on his screen.

Andy Diggle voiced some concerns as well today, listing off things he can't do in mainstream comics that leave him bewildered. Ryan Kelly's Death sketch, meanwhile, will not leave you bewildered, because it is gorgeous. The Instagram link to that and Foo Fighters and "American Idol" criticism all made the Twitter highlight reel today and await you after the jump.

Marty SurvivorHollywood producer Dino De Laurentiis, who helped make "Serpico" and "Blue Velvet" possible, passed away Wednesday at the age of 91, and he had quite a few movie-world and comics-industry fans in our feed this morning. Both Edgar Wright and Jeff Katz commemorated him in posts today, and numerous others contributed "RIP" tweets.

Other subjects were a little more controversial, with Chris Ryall contributing a theory about the mysterious contrail that appeared in the sky near Los Angeles, some "Survivor" criticism from Rob Liefeld and thoughts on "Superman vs. Muhammad Ali" from Mark Waid and Tom Brevoort. Read all of those retweets below along with a Veteran's Day meditation from Christos Gage.

Nathan FillionWith Joss Whedon officially on board as the director of "The Avengers," it's just a matter of time before the geek-friendly filmmaker finds roles for some of his most frequently used actors, right? Well, maybe not — at least not in Nathan Fillion's case.

Although Fillion has been at the center of rumors pegging him for Hank Pym in Whedon's superhero team-up, the "Castle" actor doesn't find it particularly likely that he'll actually wind up in "The Avengers."

"That would be a lovely fantasy," he told Collider about the possibility. "The fact is that I'm on 'Castle' right now, and that's 10 months out of the year. So, unless they're filming for two months, on my months off, there's just no possible way it could logistically be done." Read More...

Mad MenLast week's "Halo: Reach" release has been generating happy tweets on a daily basis in the Twitter Report feed. Yesterday, artist Mike Norton offered an assessment of the game and Nathan Fillion joked around with someone whose name you'll probably recognize at a "Reach" party.

Elsewhere, there was no shortage of "Mad Men" opinions pouring into the feed Sunday night. Mark Millar is just now getting acquainted with the series but if you caught the newest episode "The Beautiful Girls," you'll know what David Gallaher and Paul Southworth were talking about. Find out if you share their sentiments down below where you'll also see some Marvel characters drawn as cats and a "Doom Patrol" work post from Brian Keene.

Jon StewartCurrent events captured a lot of attention in the Twitter Report feed last night, with the tornado in New York and former President Bill Clinton on "The Daily Show" both sparking reactions. Nathan Fillion thought the tornado was just New York's way of welcoming him to the city, while Clinton and host John Stewart's newly-announced "Rally to Restore Sanity" turned his episode into a talking point.

Meanwhile in the U.K., Mark Millar missed a chance to see the Pope, but he didn't sound too broken up about it. His own words, another reaction to Joaquin Phoenix's "I'm Still Here" and an odd Chinese vodka discovery await you after the jump.
