"Men in Black 3" scored a worldwide tally of $578 million and counting after opening earlier this summer. If the result tells us one thing loudly and clearly, it's this: Will Smith is back, after a way-too-long four-year hiatus from starring in movies.

Smith already has his first post-"MIB" picture lined up in the form of M. Night Shyamalan's "After Earth." But there's another one of his many franchises that fans are dying to see him return to as a "Black" follow-up: "Hancock." The alcoholic god remains one of Smith's most memorable turns in the past decade, and several parties involved — Smith included — have expressed optimism about seeing him return to the role.

In the latest "Hancock 2" update, would-be director Peter Berg told MTV News: "Will Smith is up for any challenge, and he's definitely up for discussing it."

Any world in which "Marvel's The Avengers" is the third highest-grossing film of all time is a world I want to live in — it just might not be a world that diehard "Battleship" fans want to live in.

Although the Universal action flick hit theaters overseas with weeks to go before the arrival of "Avengers," the Marvel film opened ahead of "Battleship" here in the States, and the results speak for themselves: a domestic gross of $598 million and counting for Earth's mightiest heroes, while the sailors of "Battleship" settled for a mere $63 mil.

It's not a result that's lost on director Peter Berg, who recently told MTV News: "We kind of ran into a wall when 'Avengers' refused to go away ... 'The Avengers' outperformed everything. It was impossible for 'Battleship' to get any oxygen."

Even though "Battleship" is based on a pre-existing property, there's not too much backstory to go on in the pencil and paper game. Director Peter Berg and writers Jon and Erich Hoeber had to start from scratch when it came to creating a concept for this month's alien-invasion blockbuster.

In "Battleship," Earth is invaded by a group of aliens called Regents. Even though we spend an entire movie watching Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson and Alexander Skarsgard fight them, it turns out that we still don't learn all that much about the invading force. Berg told MTV News that he is hoping to get a graphic novel off the ground that explains some more of the Regents' backstory.

Although the always optimistic and energetic Peter Berg recently told us that he has high hopes for further development with a "Hancock" sequel, his equally hopeful-but-more-realistic-minded star Will Smith said we'll likely be waiting a long time for that film to ever come together.

"This is a world where entertainment is consumed on so many different levels that sequels and all those ancillary products and that stuff are always in the working," Smith told MTV News during the "Men In Black 3" press day recently when asked for an update on the sequel. "There are so many outlets now that need to be filled, so I think that producers are always discussing those things."

With director Peter Berg making the media rounds in support of his upcoming summer blockbuster "Battleship," there's plenty of talk about the nuts and bolts of the action-packed blockbuster that isn't "Transformers at sea", but also a few updates about the other projects Berg has cookin', like "Hancock 2."

"There was a phone call. That’s movement. We had a phone call last week and [producer] Akiva [Goldsman] and Will Smith were on the phone. Everyone's got ideas, and everyone seems energized," Berg said.

Despite lots of interest, "Hancock 2" has yet to take flight. Back in 2009, screenwriters were hired and the cast of Will Smith, Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman seemed back on board, but the movie stalled out due to scheduling issues.

Recently, there's been a renewed interest in the project. Director Peter Berg let it slip that Smith had some great new ideas for the sequel that the two of them had been toying around with. MTV News caught up with Berg recently while he was promoting his new film "Battleship" to try to get the record straight. Turns out a "Hancock 2" will definitely happen ... if he and Smith are able to actually meet with one another.

HancockSome how, some way, "Hancock 2" is going to happen… so says Peter Berg.

The director of the 2008 Will Smith-starring superhero film "Hancock" spoke with Comic Book Movie of returning to the virtually indestructible alcoholic hero's universe, saying that while development has been slow going, there are indeed ideas on the table for a sequel—ideals that stem from Smith himself.

DESCDirector Peter Berg is still hoping to fly alongside "Hancock 2," but that plane isn't ready for takeoff just yet.

During a visit to the set of Berg's currently filming "Battleship," Latino Review learned that the director's intentions to dive into a "Hancock" sequel have been stifled by a variety of factors, not the least of which are the busy schedules of himself, Will Smith and their collaborators.

"It's being written now and it's an issue of everybody involved in 'Hancock,'" Berg said of the movie's development. "There are so many cooks in that particular kitchen that it's so busy and Will [Smith] has kind of taken time off to be with his kids." Read More...

HancockOn Thursday we broke news that Will Smith and Charlize Theron will be returning to superhero land for "Hancock 2," the sequel to 2008's blockbuster original. Today we come bearing gifts in the form of exclusive story details about the upcoming movie.

Director Peter Berg has told MTV News that "Hancock 2," while picking up after the events of the first film, will delve deeply into a prequel/origin story that will reveal fresh info about [Spoiler Alert!] the connection between the immortal god/superheroes played by Smith and Theron and how they came to be living in modern day Los Angeles.

"We're looking at exploring their relationship prior to when we first met them and seeing a bit of what happened as a prequel," Berg said. "I think we danced around the concept of an origins and we settled on something that is very substantive. That will part of the sequel." Read More...

HancockLittle over a year after "Hancock" and its superpowered slacker namesake started gobbling up $628 million in worldwide box office sales, movement on a sequel has begun to pick up. With Peter Berg set to return as director, two new writers hired to pen the script and star Will Smith consulting on the story, all the key players seem to be falling into place.

Yet we haven't actually heard for certain that Smith and co-star Charlize Theron will definitely reprise their roles. In a conversation before he heads to the Toronto film festival with a Wayne Gretzky documentary, Berg confirmed for MTV News that both Smith and Theron will certainly be returning for more "Hancock" hero-dom.

"Everybody's going to come back for a sequel," Berg said in response to a question about the two megastars. Read More...
