In town to promote this weekend's debut of "District 9," filmmaker Peter Jackson shared some details about another project he's serving as producer for—and the sequel that he'll be getting behind the camera to direct.
"The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret Of The Unicorn" is based on the beloved comic strip with a global (and loyal) fanbase, and chronicles boy journalist Tintin's globe-trotting adventures. Jackson is serving as producer on the first film, with Steven Spielberg in the director's chair. The pair will reverse the roles for the sequel, and Jackson shared some details about where they're at with the current film and what fans can expect to see in the follow-up.
"[Spielberg]'s just finished his cut, which he's showing me when I get back home next week," Jackson told MTV News. Read more...
With its host of hobbits, giant gorillas, zombies and ghosts, filmmaker Peter Jackson's resume reads like a veritable directory of comic book archetypes. And yet, somehow there hasn't been a superhero blockbuster to date with his name in the credits.
MTV News sat down with the "District 9" producer to discuss why he's never made a superhero film, and ended up learning which franchise currently has Jackson most excited.
"The only superhero project I've ever been involved in was many, many years ago when we wrote a script for 'Concrete' for Dark Horse [Comics]," recalled Jackson. "That never happened, but I thought our script was kind of fun and [it's] still sitting on somebody's shelf." Read more...
Has America scorned Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, or have they scorned America? While there aren't any obvious offenses that come to mind, there appears to be a grudge on a surface level at least -- because United States theatergoers are going to be among the last ones to see their epic "Tintin" film!
Paramount Pictures and Sony Pictures Entertainment announced today that "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn" will hit stateside theaters on December 23, 2011 -- almost two full months after the film is released everywhere else in the world. Read more...
A couple of weeks back, we brought you the report that acclaimed director Steven Spielberg had finished a month of "performance-capture shooting" for "The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn," and was shipping his work off to his partner (but not "co-director") on the project, Peter Jackson (he of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy fame). Yet while a Spielberg/Jackson team-up could basically be considered "geek crack," the question remains: how do two insanely-acclaimed directors work together on such a project, not to mention the fact that their home-bases are literally half a world away?
Those questions were answered today in a rather informative piece in the Los Angeles Times, which looked at the process of filming the first in a planned series of three films based on the classic European comics character, and also updated fans anxiously anticipating Tintin et Milou's big-screen debut on the status of the film. After wrapping up 32 days of "performance-capture lensing" for “Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn,” director Steven Spielberg will hand off the film for post-production duties to producer Peter Jackson (“Lord of the Rings”).
According to Variety, Spielberg's performance-capture lensing would seem to be the equivalent of principal photography on the film, but the relatively new motion-capture technology in use for the rest of "Tintin" will be handled by Jackson at his special effects studio in New Zealand.
Spielberg will hold the lone directing credit on the film -- an interesting note, given that his primary duties last just over a month, while Jackson's post-production editing, special effects and other responsibilities are expected to take at least 18 months to complete. Read more...
