Iron Man

It’s hard to believe, but Robert Downey Jr.’s take on Tony Stark is getting kind of old. By the time "Iron Man 3" comes out, it’ll have been five years since the launch of the franchise -- enough for three feature films, one supporting role, and a handful of cameos. It wouldn’t be surprising to see RDJ hang up his suit to move on to bigger and better things, but for now, he’s got to make sure the series continues on a good note.

At the Brazilian premiere of "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," he told Omelete about his high hopes for "IM3."

"I think that we have an opportunity with the third Iron Man to make the best of the three, and maybe one of the better superhero movies that’s ever been made," he said. "But I think we have to remember what made the first one good. It was very character-driven. It was very odd. It was kind of outrageous. And so I think we have to have the courage to trust that the audience is really kind of cool, and smart."

“Iron Man 2" was entertaining, but it lacked the tightness of the first film. Mickey Rourke’s Ivan Vanko was sort of shuffled around, the Avengers elements felt a little rushed, and if you forgot, Tony Stark actually invented a new element in the middle of things. Just like that, a new element! Well, whatever, it happens when you’re rushing to capitalize on box office and critical success.

But according to Robert Downey Jr., the script for “Iron Man 3" is all killer and no filler.

"'Iron Man 3' is probably the best script I've read in five years, which is so funny," he said in an interview with Extra, via Comic Book Movie. “I mean, things have come so full circle that a genre superhero movie can actually be the most artistic bit of writing I read."

Iron Man

Robert Downey Jr. makes his grand return as Tony Stark in next summer's "The Avengers," fighting the Asgardian master of manipulation Loki and his minions alongside Earth's Mightiest Heroes on the streets of New York City — and once he's done cruising through the Big Apple, ol' Shellhead's taking an extended trip to Wilmington, North Carolina.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms long standing rumors that "Iron Man 3," from "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" director Shane Black and Marvel Studios, will team up with EUE/Screen Gems for a Wilmington shoot starting in early 2012.

Iron Man

If you were disappointed by "Iron Man 2," you're not alone: even Robert Downey Jr. has expressed his own dissatisfaction with the superhero sequel.

"With the second 'Iron Man' there were certain aspects that were dissatisfying and disappointing to me but at least they lit me right," he admitted during an interview with The Los Angeles Times.

The biennial D23 Expo took place this past weekend at the Anaheim Convention Center, where fans and reporters were treated to an early look at all things Disney. But of everything the company currently has in the pipeline, the project that had everyone the most excited was “The Avengers.”

While the new footage debuted at the show hasn’t made it to the Internet (not yet, at least), MTV News did manage to catch up with many of the 2012 film’s stars, including Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow). While the castmembers were reluctant to give anything away about the heavily anticipated superhero team-up flick’s plot, they were willing to talk about how surreal it was when the Avengers finally assembled.

“That was pretty crazy,” Hemsworth admitted. “It was not only meeting Robert Downey and Scarlett and whoever, but it was meeting Iron Man and Black Widow and Hulk…. [I]t’s exciting.”

Johansson agreed with Hemsworth, mentioning that one of her favorite moments was when the cast was all brought together. Perhaps surprisingly, her co-star, Renner, explained that there were only two days when the entire team was on set at the same time.

Iron ManWith "The Avengers" just about wrapped, Robert Downey Jr. is ready to talk "Iron Man 3."

“My sense of it is that we need to leave it all on the field — whatever that means in the end,” he told The Los Angeles Times. “You can pick several different points of departure for that.”

Fortunately he's still got two years until the movie hits theaters, and that leaves plenty of time for him and writer/director Shane Blake to figure out how "Iron Man 3" will continue on from where Jon Favreau left off in the previous two films. It also needs to transition from "The Avengers" back to the single-hero Marvel film.

DESCRobert Downey Jr. must be busy with both “Iron Man 3" and “The Avengers” on his to-do list, but he still managed to sit down for an interview about both films alongside Jon Favreau, director of “Iron Man” and “Iron Man 2.”

Speaking about “The Avengers” during last weekend's Hero Complex Film Festival (and transcribed by Slash Film), Downey said, “I tend to look at a scene and say ‘This is absolutely impossible, we can’t shoot this, it’s horrible. I can tell you 10 other movies it’s been in, I refuse.’ I usually start off the morning by refusing to do what I’ve signed on to do. So I brought that attitude, happily.”

“I just thought ‘How are you gonna put all of us clowns together? He’s wearing a suit, he’s all jacked up, he’s so-and-so, and poor Mark Ruffalo, he’s gonna out do us,'" continued Downey. "And we’re about six weeks in and I have to say [director] Joss Whedon is nailing it. He’s so smart and so good. And it’s gonna be great. I can’t believe I just said it, I never could’ve believed this, but it’s gonna be great.” Read More...

Our introduction to the 2011 MTV Movie Awards nominees hailing from the comic book movie world continues today with another double-dose of actors portraying some of last year's most popular costumed heroes.

In the "Biggest Badass star" category, "Kick-Ass" star Chloë Grace Moretz and "Iron Man 2" headliner Robert Downey Jr. go up against a trio of other brawlers who kicked no small amount of butt on the big screen in 2010. And just in case you need a reminder why Moretz and Downey are in the mix, we've put together a little refresher video for each of them.

Robert Downey Jr.
Let's face it: Iron Man wasn't a household name until Downey made the role his own, and he continued to keep the armored Avenger on everyone's minds last year in "Iron Man 2." Not only did he have a climactic brawl with "Best Villain" nominee Mickey Rourke, but he also had a memorable showdown with Don Cheadle, who had everyone looking forward to his debut as War Machine. Oh, and on top of all that, he donned the briefcase armor — what more can fans ask? (*cough* Mandarin *cough*) Read More...

When MTV News interviewed actor Mark Ruffalo about his role as the Hulk in "The Avengers", we surprised him with an offer to don some "Hulk Hands." After some initial surprise, Ruffalo was excited to put on the green-skinned gauntlets to give fans an early peek at his portrayal of Marvel's green-skinned goliath.

During the interview, Ruffalo also confirmed that, in addition to playing Bruce Banner, he will have some key lines as Hulk, too. Read More...

We're still a long ways off from seeing "Iron Man 3" in theaters, but when the third installment of Marvel's blockbuster franchise does arrive in theaters, we could be looking at a very different adventure with the iconic armored Avenger, courtesy of new director Shane Black. One thing that won't change, however, is the man underneath the helmet, actor Robert Downey, Jr.

MTV News caught up with Downey on the set of his next film, "Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows," to get his take on the run-up to "The Avengers," Jon Favreau's departure from the "Iron Man" franchise, and the new guy behind the camera for "Iron Man 3."

"You grow a moustache and then they do something here [points to chin]. That's how easy it is," laughed Downey when asked about his preparation for "The Avengers," Marvel's superhero team-up film that will have him returning as billionaire industrialist Tony Stark. "It's going to be great, once I tell them what to do." Read More...
