Sin CityIf you follow the little news that trickles out from time to time on "Sin City 2," you've probably gotten used to hearing the same things. Robert Rodriguez says the script is halfway done, then Frank Miller says the script is halfway done. Robert Rodriguez says it's almost done, then Frank Miller says it's almost done and that he hates Occupy Wall Street. Things have become cyclical.

The one piece of news from that camp that offered any new or different information came down the line back in August. The Academy Award-winning screenwriter behind "The Departed," William Monahan, was going to take a crack at the screenplay.

Up until that point, the project had been very much the child of Rodriguez and Frank Miller. Adding Monahan to the mix was simultaneously unexpected and perhaps a sign of hope that progress was actually being made.

Indiewire spoke with Rodriguez while he was promoting the DVD for "Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World" and asked the director where the project stands and what Monahan had to do with the script.

Sin City 2

There's been talk about a "Sin City 2" for years now, with the back and forth dialogue focusing on partially written scripts and delays. But at New York Comic Con, the creator of the comics and co-director Frank Miller told MTV Geek that he and Robert Rodriguez were polishing up the script to potentially begin production soon.

"Robert Rodriguez and I are finishing up the script on 'Sin City' right now and could be shooting as early as this spring," Miller says. His comments line up with what Rodriguez said earlier this year.

It's been about a month since we got a slew of upcoming project updates from Robert Rodriguez at Comic-Con, in addition to a VIP tour of the excellent Frank Franzetta art exhibit, so now that Rodriguez is making the rounds doing press for "Spy Kids 4: All The Time In The World," we have another opportunity to check-in on his "Sin City 2" progress.

"We're still working on the script for "Sin City 2,"" Rodriguez told MTV News. "I'm excited about that, I know a lot of people are always on the look out for it, the time is finally coming. We've been telling everybody that we're going to shoot this year, so we actually have to shoot this year," he added when asked about the production's official start date.

Rodriguez had mentioned previously that he didn't foresee a problem getting stars to sign on for the sequel, just the matter of finding roles to accommodate them.

Robert Rodriguez knows how to work the San Diego Comic-Con hype machine. The filmmaker scheduled a panel for the first day of the Con, but wouldn't let slip what he would actually be presenting. The mystery persisted up until he took the stage, at which point Rodriguez proceeded to drop bomb after bomb.

"Sin City 2" is picking up speed and could begin production this year; two "Machete" sequels are in the works, the second of which will take place in space; and Rodriguez has partnered with the estate of Frank Frazetta both to create a museum for the legendary artist's work and to use that work as the basis for an entire new franchise of films -- starting with a loose remake of 1983's "Fire and Ice." Boom!

Just hours after the panel, Rodriguez invited us into the Hard Rock to give us an exclusive look at some of Frazetta's work and the Frazetta-inspired films he wants to make in the future. He showed us a painting titled "Conan the Barbarian," a 1966 work that established the iconic look of the sword-swinging hero. He dove into a depiction of "Death Dealer," a character around which he wants to make a future movie. And he revealed that "Silver Warriors" inspired the poster he put together for "Predators."

Finding out that Robert Rodriguez still wants "Sin City 2" to happen is something of a San Diego Comic-Con tradition for MTV News.

This year MTV News caught up with the "Machete" director while he was showing off his new Frank Frazetta art gallery, and he said that the follow-up to the 2005 comic-book flick was still in the works and that the script is coming into its own. While official casting won't start until the script is finalized and in studio hands, Rodriguez said that actors whose names have cropped up in the past -- like Angelina Jolie and Rachel Weisz -- could still join the project.

"I don't think we'll have trouble [getting stars to come] on board because people loved 'Sin City' and they love that world and they love a chance to play in that arena and so many actors especially love film noir, and it's such an updated modernized film noir that it doesn’t feel nostalgic," he explained. "It feels new, so I think people will run to be a part of it."

DeadpoolBefore "X-Men" visual-effects guru Tim Miller landed in the director's chair for "Deadpool" last month, rumors were flying that Robert Rodriguez was in advanced negotiations to take on helming duties of the Marvel adaptation set to star Ryan Reynolds.

There's only one problem with this development narrative: it's not true. That's what Rodriguez told MTV News when we caught up with the filmmaker recently.

"I was working with Fox already on 'Predators' and I asked what other movies they had coming up," he explained. "It was 'Planet of the Apes' and other stuff. They said I might want to see 'Deadpool.' So I said, 'Sure, send it to me.' Almost just out of curiosity. And if I really, really wanted to do it, maybe I could figure out a way to do it. But that wasn't really going to happen. I just couldn't fit it in with other projects." Read More...

At this point in the "Sin City 2" news cycle, it's not too much of a stretch to say that we've heard it all before. Robert Rodriguez can't wait to start! All the cast members are ready to go! Etc., etc. Still, we have hope! And it doesn't stop us asking key participants like Rosario Dawson what they've heard about a possible start date.

"I have not heard very much except that Robert [Rodriguez] is still insistent that we’re going to make it and we’re going to make sure to put something in there for Brittany [Murphy] to recognize her," the "Unstoppable" actress revealed. "Unfortunately it’s been so long now and she’s not with us anymore and she was a huge integral part to that first film, it would be important to do that." Read More...

Wolverine 2Earlier this month, reports emerged linking David Slade ("The Twilight Saga: Eclipse") and Robert Schwentke ("Red") as potential directors of "Wolverine 2." And it now appears that another director has been added to the mix.

According to Deadline, Darren Aronofsky has emerged as one of the finalists to helm the "Wolverine" sequel. In addition to previously working with "Wolverine" star Hugh Jackman on "The Fountain," Aronofsky has also directed several acclaimed films including "Pi," "Requiem for a Dream" and "The Wrestler."

However, the report also states that Slade may hold the edge because "he is coming off a big summer movie with large-scale effects, which makes the studio comfortable." Read More...

DeadpoolBack in June, reports circulated that Robert Rodriguez was offered the "Deadpool" movie starring Ryan Reynolds in the title role. Although Rodriguez confirmed to MTV News at Comic-Con that he had read an early draft of the script, further information has been hard to come by... until now.

According to The Los Angeles Times, discussions between Fox and Rodriguez have advanced "beyond the casual discussion stage" and have moved on to negotiating deal points. If Rodriguez does agree to direct "Deadpool," it would be after he finishes "Spy Kids 4." Read More...

Robert Rodriguez surely has many more San Diego Comic-Con memories left to be made in his career, perhaps even one or two involving a Deadpool movie. The "Machete" director made a trip to Comic-Con International this year for for a film that's turning into a comic book, rather than vice versa, but "Sin City" holds a special place in his heart to this day when it comes to landmark events at the show.

"Probably the first treasured memory is my first big presentation — was coming here with a piece no one had seen that I had cut together myself comparing the footage to the comic of 'Sin City' and showing that to an audience and telling the whole story of how we did it and making these little mini-posters out of our own studio that we had our actors sign," Rodriguez told MTV News, "and that iconic Jessica Alba one was the one that was then selling the next week on eBay for hundreds and hundreds of dollars."
