Ryan Reynolds may be tackling the roles of two of comics' toughest characters, but that doesn't mean he's immune from the power of Hollywood secrecy. Appearing as a guest on last evening's "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon," the actor seemed stoked about portraying both Green Lantern and Deadpool – even if he had to keep his reasons to himself for the most part.
Though Reynolds insisted that he had to stay quiet on the details of the upcoming "Green Lantern" adaptation, he did reveal one important bit of information – a rough timetable for filming. Read more...
Asked who he thought would be credited as the breakout performance in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," director Gavin Hood put his money on Ryan Reynolds.
The actor who already starred in "Van Wilder" and "Smokin' Aces" took a step to the side of Hugh Jackman's spotlight for his role as Deadpool in the movie, which hit stores on DVD and Blu-ray two weeks ago, but that part might have tipped his career favorably now that he has a Deadpool solo movie and the title role in "Green Lantern" awaiting him.
Hood points to Reynolds physical commitment to the role his success in the film. Read more...
Despite this month's DVD debut of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," things have been relatively quiet regarding the film's most mouthy (or in this case, mouthless) supporting character Wade Wilson, better known to fans as Deadpool.
Now if the excited posts on Deadpool co-creator Robert Liefeld's Twitter page are any indication, the project could be healthier than ever.
"Great Deadpool movie meeting! Lauren Shuler Donner and her team are headed in the right direction!" Liefeld Tweeted last night. Read more...
Between the recent release of the animated "Green Lantern: First Flight" and the acquisition of Ryan Reynolds for 2011's live-action "Green Lantern" movie, the willpower of Lantern-lovers finally seems to be winning out in Hollywood. Heck, there was even that amazingly well-done "Green Lantern" fan trailer that cast Nathan Fillion as DC's Emerald Avenger.
When MTV News caught up with Fillion, the "Castle" and "Firefly" star voiced his support for both the faux trailer and Reynolds' qualifications to wield the most powerful weapon in the universe.
"A friend of mine, P.J., introduced me to this fan trailer, a fan-made trailer of me as the Green Lantern, which tickled me to no end," Fillion told MTV News. "It was actually really incredibly well done." Read more...
Ryan Reynolds might not be the first actor to play both DC and Marvel Comics characters in theaters by the time he finishes work on "Green Lantern," but he might be the most tightly scheduled, depending on how the film's shooting calendar matches up with the "Deadpool" production schedule.
Starring in two competing films in 2011 doesn't seem to faze Reynolds, however, least of all because the properties come from opposites sides of comics' Big Two publishers.
"There's no rule that says you can't play two different characters in two different comic-book universes," Reynolds told Entertainment Weekly. Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld pointed out Reynolds' comment on his Twitter site. Read more...
In the world of comics, a few superstar creators have made names for themselves on both Marvel and DC Comics titles. Artist Jim Lee launched "X-Men" and went on to do a classic run on "Batman." John Byrne defined "Fantastic Four" for years before redefining "Superman" in the 1980s.
Now, some of the biggest names in film are getting the chance to do the same with Marvel and DC's biggest characters, and big-name actors like Ryan Reynolds and Natalie Portman are getting the chance to define both publishers' characters for filmgoers.
Here are five actors who have been cast in live-action roles for characters originating in both the Marvel and DC Comics worlds. Read more...
Now that Ryan Reynolds has been tagged to play both Green Lantern and Deadpool in upcoming films, there's no small amount of buzz regarding how the DC hero's big-screen debut could affect the Marvel mercenary's solo spin-off film. With both films currently scheduled for release in 2011, will doubling up mean that one film will suffer at the expense of the other, or could competition between the two projects benefit fans of both characters?
We aren't likely to receive answers to these questions anytime soon, but there does seem to be cause for concern -- or joy, depending on how you look at it -- for fans of DC's Emerald Knight and Marvel's Merc With A Mouth. Read more...
It appears that Ryan Reynolds has landed the lead role in the live-action "Green Lantern" movie. After a flurry of rumors, speculation and announcements over the last 24 hours regarding who would star in the film, the "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" actor was named as the star of the Martin Campbell-directed film this evening.
Earlier this morning, it was announced that Reynolds was one of three official contenders for the role alongside "The Hangover" star Bradley Cooper and musician/actor Justin Timberlake. According to Variety, "the momentum built for Reynolds in the last week, as he was the only actor whose option was extended." Read more...
After today's announcement regarding the three actors contending for the lead role in the "Green Lantern" movie, there's been no small amount of chatter around the InterWebs about who should play Hal Jordan in the character's big-screen debut.
Is "The Hangover" star Bradley Cooper best suited to play DC's cocky pilot-turned-superhero, or is "Deadpool" actor Ryan Reynolds more the cosmic policeman type? And what about pop star and budding actor Justin Timberlake? Here's your chance to tell the world who you think should bring Hal Jordan to the screen. Read more...
If you immediately cried foul on the Justin Timberlake as Green Lantern rumor, you might want to bite your tongue. As it turns out, the pop sensation's chances of playing Hal Jordan are very real, though he'll have to fend off two other serious contenders on his way towards the power ring.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, three frontrunners have emerged in the race to star in "Green Lantern" for Warner Bros. Two of those names are familiar -- Bradley Cooper and Justin Timberlake -- but the other is new to the mix. No stranger to comic book fare, none other than Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds is also a contender for the role. Read more...
