As close as Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr., Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale, and any other superhero director/actor team might have worked together to develop their successful franchises, the “Deadpool” flick seems likely to be the most collaborative of the genre. As fans know, star Ryan Reynolds has been the driving force behind getting the movie made — and as the project’s writers recently confirmed to us, they do indeed speak with him everyday.
“We’re outlining it pretty seriously right now,” explained Rhett Reese who — along with partner Paul Wernick — is red-hot after writing “Zombieland,” which just hit DVD. “We’re in the early stages.”
“We just absolutely adore the character and the comic,” explained Wernick. “And tonally, it’s right up our alley. He’s the unstable, smart-ass, self deprecating guy — and they say write what you know, so [we’re perfect for it]." Read more...
Despite his status as the "Green Lantern" lead, Ryan Reynolds is pulling double duty in the comic book world as Deadpool in the antihero's upcoming solo film. Since the "Deadpool" movie was announced, Reynolds has been very vocal regarding his desire for the film to stick closely to the character's comic book roots, specifically the need to break down the fourth wall.
With "Zombieland" writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick set to tackle the "Deadpool" script, fans can only hope that the screenwriters are adhering to Reynolds' wishes to keep the story close to the merc with a mouth's origins. Luckily, it sounds like the actor's vocal desires aren't falling on deaf ears.
"I talk to them every single day," Reynolds told MTV News during an interview at the Sundance Film Festival. "We're all very sick of each other already. It's actually a really wonderful creative trifecta — we're having a very good time." Read more...
The cast for "Green Lantern" is starting to fill out. Over the last several weeks, the previously cast Ryan Reynolds has been joined by "Gossip Girl" leading lady Blake Lively as Hal Jordan's love interest Carol Ferris, "An Education" star Peter Sarsgaard as the villainous Hector Hammond and "Sherlock Holmes" bad guy Mark Strong as Sinestro, Hal's mentor turned nemesis.
While there are still other actors remaining to join Martin Campbell's "Green Lantern," Reynolds could only speak to the cast members that are officially on board — specifically Lively, who the eventual defender of Space Sector 2814 described as a perfect fit for the film's female lead. In brightest day of Sundance's fog, does Ryan Reynolds know Green Lantern's song? That's the question that MTV News put to the "Green Lantern" star during the Sundance Film Festival this weekend — and sadly, the answer is sure to disappoint fans of the DC Comics franchise.
While Reynolds insisted that he knows the Green Lantern Oath by heart, the actor refused to recite it when requested by MTV's Josh Horowitz.
"I'm not doing the oath for you on national internet," Reynolds declared, staring directly into the camera's lens. "Of course I know the Oath — the Oath is very simple — but no, Josh, I'm absolutely not doing it." Read more...
Yesterday, we brought you an update on the "Deadpool" movie's writer and director search, straight from leading man Ryan Reynolds — and now we have the promised follow-up with the man tagged to bring both the Marvel mercenary and one of DC's most iconic characters, Green Lantern, to the big screen.
"No, there's no Deadpool suit that I've tried on," Reynolds told MTV News when asked if he's had a chance to see himself in the character's familiar red-and-black costume. However, that doesn't mean he hasn't given any thought to other aspects of Wade Wilson's solo debut.
"I've told Fox already that the only way there's ever gong to be a 'Deadpool' trailer is if Deadpool makes his own trailer," he laughed. "He needs to be talking to the movie audience ... with the movie trailer voice: 'In a world... gone mad... one man... must stand alone...'"

Last month, "Deadpool" and "Green Lantern" star Ryan Reynolds gave us an update on both films and offered even more reason why he's the actor MTV is most thankful for this year. However, that wasn't all the actor had to say about the solo debut of Marvel's mouthy mercenary, Wade Wilson (a.k.a. Deadpool).
Not only did Reynolds tell MTV News about the process of finding a screenwriter for the "Deadpool" movie, he also offered up some thoughts on his "dream director" for the project.
"You think directors for a movie like this and you immediately picture [Quentin] Tarantino or somebody like that," Reynolds told MTV News. "Obviously Tarantino is a guy that likes to direct his own material, so there's a good chance he wouldn't be the guy. We all have our lists of dream directors." Read more...
Last week, we explained why "Deadpool" and "Green Lantern" actor Ryan Reynolds is one of the actors we're thankful for this year around MTV HQ. In fact, he's the actor we're most thankful for this year — and not just because he shared more details with us about the pair of upcoming, much-anticipated comic book movies he's starring in soon. (Though that was certainly an added bonus!)
After offering up some thoughts about Green Lantern's costume, Reynolds told MTV News that the scenes in which Hal Jordan isn't in costume will likely be the most memorable from the film — much like Robert Downey Jr.'s time spent out of Tony Stark's armor in "Iron Man."
"I think you walk away from this first film, and the moments that you remember and the moments that mean so much to you, not unlike 'Iron Man,' are the moments where the guy's not in the suit," said Reynolds. Read more...
All week long, we've brought you exclusive interviews with the actors and filmmakers we're most thankful for in 2009 — including "Star Trek" duo J.J. Abrams and Chris Pine, Quentin Tarantino (who told us about his comic book inspiration for "Inglourious Basterds"), and "Iron Man 2" actor Sam Rockwell. Heck, we even heard from Stan Lee about what he's thankful for this year.
Now, we're wrapping things up with an actor poised to have a very big year in the comics scene: "Green Lantern" and "Deadpool" star Ryan Reynolds.
In our extensive interview with Reynolds, he discusses his work on the upcoming comic book movies, his debut as Wade "Deadpool" Wilson in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," and his critically praised performances in the romantic comedy "The Proposal" and indie film "Adventureland." But we all know which films you're here to read about, so here's what Reynolds had to say...

Bill Birch, the co-writer of the upcoming “Shazam” feature film has revealed that Ryan Reynolds was his first choice to portray Captain Marvel on the big screen.
“I always thought Ryan Reynolds would have been interesting but now that he’s Green Lantern that’s not an option,” Birch told Cinefools. Birch also elaborated on whether he believes Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is still onboard to play Captain Marvel’s nemesis, Black Adam.
“My rule of thumb is that no actor is committed to do a movie until the first day of shooting is over with,” Birch explained. “I know that ['Shazam' Director] Pete Segal and Dwayne have a relationship that was solidified when Pete directed 'Get Smart.' As far as him being committed? I'm sure it'll all depend on the script.” Read more...
Ryan Reynolds may be tackling the roles of two of comics' toughest characters, but that doesn't mean he's immune from the power of Hollywood secrecy. Appearing as a guest on last evening's "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon," the actor seemed stoked about portraying both Green Lantern and Deadpool – even if he had to keep his reasons to himself for the most part.
Though Reynolds insisted that he had to stay quiet on the details of the upcoming "Green Lantern" adaptation, he did reveal one important bit of information – a rough timetable for filming. Read more...
