Cowboys & Aliens

In what can only be described as a shocking instance of candidness, Universal chief Ron Meyer spoke to a crowd at the Savannah Film Festival and skewered several of the studio's most recent big-budget flops, as well as discussing why those films just didn't work.

As he explained it: "We make a lot of sh---y movies. Every one of them breaks my heart."

During his talk at the festival, Meyer opened up about a number of recent Universal titles. Movieline was there and asked him specifically about the critically and financially underwhelming comic book adaptation "Cowboys & Aliens" and the poorly-received "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World."

Iron Man 2When last year's Oscar nominations were announced, we lamented the fact that "Coraline" was the closest we got to a nod for a film based on a comic book property. This year, we have one very clear comic book movie in the mix, "Iron Man 2," but it remains the sole representative of the comics world.

The 2011 Oscar Nominations were announced today, and "Iron Man 2" received a nomination in the "Visual Effects" category. The only comic book movie named in this year's nominations will face stiff competition in the category from "Alice in Wonderland," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1," "Hereafter," and "Inception."

Sure, 2010 wasn't exactly the strongest year for comic book movies, but was "Iron Man 2" the only project worth a nod? I'd argue that there's another movie that could have made the list, too. Read More...

"Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" arrived on DVD and Blu-Ray last week, offering what could be the closing chapter on one of the most interesting — and for many, frustrating — stories of the year when it comes to the comics-to-film process. The product of a celebrated pairing of filmmaker and source material, director Edgar Wright's adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's comic book series lived up to (and possibly exceeded) fans' expectations when it came to capturing the appeal of the books — but fell dramatically short of expectations at the box office.

When Wright dropped by Splash Page HQ last week, we asked him why he felt things turned out the way they did with his "Scott Pilgrim" experience.

"Anything that's a little bit different is a little bit harder to sell," Wright told MTV News. "And when you have to go beyond the core of the geek audience — and I say that as a geek myself, I don't use it as a derogatory term — you have to work a little bit harder." Read More...

The theatrical version of "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" that you've seen was not always the version you were meant to see -- once upon a time, director Edgar Wright's adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's graphic novel series ended very, very differently.

When Wright swung by Splash Page headquarters earlier this week to promote the film's recent Blu-ray release, the filmmaker revealed that there was a different ending to "Scott Pilgrim" than the conclusion that actually made it into the final cut -- but that doesn't mean you can't still check out the deleted ending.

"The ending you saw in the theaters is my preferred ending," said Wright. "But I like showing everything!" Read More...

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The WorldWith "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" arriving on DVD and Blu-Ray tomorrow (Tuesday, November 9), we have some great stuff to give away to a few lucky readers.

Wait, did I say great? I meant to say EPIC...

The good folks at Universal and ABKCO Records have provided us with a bunch of great items to give away to readers — including an awesomely indie-friendly edition of the "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" soundtrack on vinyl! Oh, and it just happens to be autographed by Young Neil himself, Johnny Simmons. Read More...

Edgar WrightWith "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" hitting shelves next week on DVD and Blu-Ray, we managed to snag some time with director Edgar Wright, the man behind one of the year's best films (in our humble opinion) — and we're turning to you for questions!

Wright will drop by Splash Page HQ next week on Monday, November 8, to chat about the release of "Scott Pilgrim" the following day. Since his adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's hit comic book series was such a hit here on the site, we'd like to turn the mic over to you (in a fashion), and bring your questions to the man himself. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World"Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" hits shelves on DVD and Blu-Ray in November, and Universal has released the full specs for every iteration of Edgar Wright's live-action adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's hit comic book series.

While the movie didn't quite meet expectations at the box office, it was difficult to find anyone who didn't have high praise for Wright's kinetic, effects-driven celebration of everything that made O'Malley's comic so great. And like any good DVD/Blu-Ray release, the movie comes packed with some cool bonus features, too.

Personally, I'm a little intrigued by the deleted scenes and alternate footage, as I managed to sneak into an early workprint of the film and, well... the ending of the unfinished version of the film was quite different from the theater cut I saw. Read More...

Okay, so "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" didn't do as well in theaters as many of us hoped, but for those of us who did buy a ticket (or two or three) and want to keep showing some love to Edgar Wright's awesomely kinetic, retro-tastic adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's comics, this giveaway is for you.

So... I have a pair of official "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" hats for two lucky, Twitter-enabled readers that need a good home. Here's a photo:

Okay, this one comes with a big ol' SPOILER ALERT, people. Seriously, if you haven't read the sixth and final volume of Bryan Lee O'Malley's "Scott Pilgrim" comics, STOP RIGHT NOW.

Okay, we clear now? Everyone who's even the slightest bit spoiler-conscious has left the room? Let's proceed then, shall we?

When I spoke to the "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" cast at Comic-Con, one of the interesting moments in our conversation occurred when I asked Mark Webber, Johnny Simmons, and Alison Pill (who play Sex Bob-Omb musicians Stephen Stills, Young Neil, and Kim Pine, respectively) whether they'd read the final volume of the comic to find out what happens to their characters there. The big reveal in Webber's response was something I just had to share with you.

"I haven't read it yet either, but interestingly enough, I do know what happens to my character," said Webber. "Because in the production of the film, we were each given ten secrets about our characters." Read More...

Scott PilgrimFROM MTV MOVIES: "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" is the first movie to bring us, among many other things, on-screen battle-scoring, a visit from the Vegan Police, and a really cute kickass girl named Knives.

For most of its modest run-time (112 minutes), Edgar Wright's new comedy lays persuasive claim to being the year's most blazingly imaginative film. Well, okay, along with "Inception." But Wright's movie is also blazingly funny, something no one has yet attempted to assert about the Christopher Nolan blockbuster.

The picture is a dizzying creative leap for Wright, the giddy parodist behind "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz." Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim comics began appearing in 2004, and the director latched onto them almost immediately. One understands why it has taken him so long to bring O'Malley's fantastical stories to the screen — the cast, which is deep in talented young actors, must have been difficult to align.
