Shailene Woodley

by Brett White

Spider-Man fans were shocked to learn that Shailene Woodley's role as Mary Jane Watson had been removed from "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," especially since all of the actress' scenes had already been shot.

Initially it was stated that Mary Jane was just being postponed to a later Spider flick, but that statement's truth has been called into question. There was even a rumor that new cast addition Sarah Gadon was replacing Woodley in the role ASAP. That's been denied, but the reasons behind MJ's bumping has yet to be revealed. Until now... maybe.

Hollywood Life has heard from an unnamed source "close to the production" the supposed real reasons Shailene was held back. They're full of spoilers, though, so don't go peeking after the jump unless you're ready for it.

It looks like Spider-Man will have to wait just a bit longer to hit the jackpot. In the middle of their cover story about the upcoming YA film "Divergent," Entertainment Weekly revealed that leading actress Shailene Woodley's small part in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" has been pushed back to the third installment in the ever-expanding franchise.

"Of course I'm bummed," Woodley told Entertainment Weekly. "But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason... Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film."

Amazing Spider-Man 2

An article about New York City's tax policy and role in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" drops a hint as to just how much time has passed between Spidey's big screen web-slinging adventures.

In addition to standard details about the film's shooting schedule, which is expected to keep New York City's citizens in Peter Parker's presence for 151 days, the "Wall Street Journal" piece references that a Columbia University dorm room has been built, outfitted for a female freshman with "sparkly sneakers and film-noir posters."

The "Descendants" and "Secret Life of the American Teenager" star is the lucky actress joining the "Amazing Spider-Man" franchise as Mary Jane Watson, previously played in the Spidey films by Kirsten Dunst. The Amazing Spider-Man

Director Marc Webb swings back into action on the "Amazing Spider-Man" sequel with a May 2, 2014 release date already on the table. At the moment, it seems the filmmaker is knee-deep in the pre-production process, including daily meetings with writers and taking time to chat with the fans.

Webb held a Q&A session on his Twitter page late last week, during which he addressed some of the big talking points surrounding his next "Spider-Man" film. Chief among them: whether or not Shailene Woodley has a role in the sequel, if Spidey is going to get a costume makeover, and how the writing process is going.

See what he had to say below the break.
