A few weeks back, the rare cross-breed of comics/Broadway geeks got the lowdown on "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" -- the upcoming Spider-Man Broadway musical directed by Tony Award-winner Julie Taymor ("The Lion King") and featuring music composed by Bono and The Edge. (Not surprisingly, it's rumored to be the most expensive production ever to hit NYC's Great White Way.)

MTV News caught up one of the production's stars, Evan Rachel Wood, during this year's Oscars to hear what she had to say about Webhead's Broadway debut.

"We did a small little run-through for Marvel and got their approval," said Wood. "Rehearsals are starting in the fall. It's going to be great." Read More...

'Spider-Man, Turn Off The Dark'Years of speculation, bizarre rumors and lofty creative ambitions will finally culminate in an opening night for “Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark” next year on Broadway. The high-profile musical will unite U2’s Bono and The Edge with Tony Award-winning director Julie Taymor (“Across the Universe”), promising high standards for the show’s sense of visual and sonic spectacle.

“The musical follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down—literally—when he’s bitten by a genetically altered spider and wakes up the next morning clinging to his bedroom ceiling,” states the newly revealed plot synopsis. “This bullied science-geek—suddenly endowed with astonishing powers—soon learns, however, that with great power comes great responsibility as villains test not only his physical strength but also his strength of character.

The official announcement doesn’t name villains, but does hint at a comics-friendly grand finale. Read More...

Evan Rachel WoodWe've been hearing quite a bit lately about the love-it-or-hate-it "Spider-Man: The Musical" -- from news that it will be the most expensive Broadway production in history to Bono describing his score to the stage production as "a hallucinogenic experience for theatregoers" -- but little has been heard from Evan Rachel Wood, thus far the only cast member announced for the show.

That said, Sci Fi Wire recently caught up with Wood, and let's just say that her silence wasn't for lack of excitement about the musical. "I'm doing 'Spider-Man' on Broadway, starting in June," said Wood in the Sci Fi Wire story. "I'm really excited. It's Julie Taymor, who did 'The Lion King' on Broadway, and she's really kind of doing the same thing. [She] takes it to this whole other level. It's awesome! It's really spectacular. They're using new technology and wirework." Read More...

Spider-ManSure, on the surface, Broadway musicals and comic books go together like Tony Stark and a six-pack of O'Doul's, but when you've got the musical miracle workers that are Bono and The Edge from U2 (who are co-writing "Spider-Man: The Musical"), fantastical funnybook magic can happen.

Hot on the heels of reports that Evan Rachel Wood had joined the cast to play Mary Jane Watson in the production, the U.K.'s Times Online published an extensive piece on "Spider-Man: The Musical," and how Broadway's current ticket sales slump may affect the show. However, we're gonna eschew the prevailing gloom-and-doom of that piece, and focus on what Bono had to say about his plans for the musical, which is reportedly gearing up to be the most expensive to ever run on NYC's Great White Way.

According to the Times piece, Bono says that the show will be "something the likes of which no one has seen or heard," and says the music will be "part punk rock and part opera." Read More...

Evan Rachel WoodLook out, Kirsten Dunst! IESB reports that Evan Rachel Wood will play the role of Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man: The Musical, which is set to debut on Broadway sometime in 2010.

No stranger to musical theater, Wood recently starred in "Across The Universe," a "jukebox musical" based on the songs of the Beatles. Not coincidentally, that film was directed by Julie Taymor, who is also directing the Spidey production. At the moment, all signs seem to be pointing to Wood's "Universe" co-star Jim Sturgess playing the role of your friendly neighborhood wall-crawler, but the British actor has yet to publicly confirm his participation. However, he has workshopped the material with Wood and Taymor in New York, so it seems rather likely. Read More...

Spider-ManFor you fans out there who are eagerly anticipating next year's "Spider-Man: The Musical" (although judging by some of your comments on a recent Splash Page post about this, there might not be too many of you), be prepared for a true spectacle, as the musical is rumored to be the most expensive production in the history of Broadway...but that might not necessarily be a good thing.

In a story posted on the New York Post's website, "Spider-Man: The Musical" is currently carrying a $40 million production price tag, mostly going to the show's multiple costume, set and various other designers. While those types of figures are a drop in the bucket for most big-budget films these days, on Broadway that number is unheard of, and are leading many in the theater biz to think the show may be doomed before the curtain even goes up -- considering the show will have "a weekly running cost of $1 million, [and] will have to run about 8,000 years in a Broadway theater just to break even," according to the Post's figures. 'Spider-Man'Ever since casting calls for "Spider-Man: The Musical" first began circulating back in 2007, the 'Tubes have been buzzing about Broadway veteran Julie Taymor's crossover with the comics world.

Along with a score penned by U2 bandmates Bono and The Edge, the project is rumored to feature Taymor's "Across the Universe" stars Jim Sturgess and Evan Rachel Wood as Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, respectively. And now the musical just might have a release date, too.

According to IESB, Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel announced to attendees at today's Thomas Weisel Consumer Conference that he expects the musical to debut in 2009 -- a full year ahead of previously reported release schedules. Earlier this year, reports leaked from workshops related to the project had first pegged Sturgess and Wood as the film's leads, and a subsequent interview with Sturgess on Cinematical seemed to confirm the actor's involvement with the project.
