This morning, Variety reported that the long-in-development "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" reboot has finally found a director in Jonathan Liebesman, the man responsible for "Battle: Los Angeles." Frankly, I think we're in trouble here. The more I'm hearing about this project, the less it's sounding like the Turtles I know.

This is the last thing I want to see, so I've devised a series of measures that need to be followed closely in order to save the next TMNT. With strict adherence and a little luck, all may not be lost.

FROM MTV GEEK: The original 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie and Elias Koteas notwithstanding, Casey Jones: The Movie by Polaris Banks is probably the most spot-on film treatment of the hockey-masked avenger you will ever find. With superior acting, cinematography, and direction, it is more than just another fan film -- but rather something more akin to TMNT as done by Martin Scorsese.

Banks describes his rationale for putting so much time and effort into Casey Jones: The Movie as follows: he "felt obligated to make the movie simply because he knew that nobody else would." In addition to wearing many hats on the production, including director, writer, and editor, he also plays ninja turtle Donatello -- yep, that's right, the turtles themselves are also in the film, as well as April O'Neil in her yellow jumpsuit. The look of Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael are closer to the original movies than the later ones, but are surprisingly good -- and complete with animatronics to bring their facial expressions to life.

Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesWith the new CG “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” set to premiere on Nickelodeon in 2012, some well-known actors have been pulled on board to voice the anthropomorphized fighting turtles. The latest is Sean Astin, perhaps best known as Samwise Gamgee in the “Lord of the Rings” films, who will be voicing Raphael.

The other three main characters have also been cast, with Jason Biggs of “American Pie” fame as Leonardo, Greg Cipes (Beast Boy in “Teen Titans) as Michelangelo, and longtime voice actor Rob Paulsen (“Pinky and the Brain” and “Animaniacs”) as Donatello. Ironically, Paulsen voiced Raphael in the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” series that ran from 1987 to 1996. Read More...

Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesIt's been almost a year since our last update on the planned reboot of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie franchise, but there's apparently been some recent movement on the project, with Paramount hiring a new writing duo to bring the heroes in a half-shell back to the big screen.

"Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" scribes Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec have been hired to rewrite the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" script initially penned by "Iron Man" writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, according to Deadline. The pair previously collaborated on Louis Letterier's upcoming film "Now You See Me."

The most recent reports had the film pegged to be a hybrid of live-action and CGI effects, with Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form producing the film. Read More...

Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesWay back in October 2009, we brought you the news that Leonardo, Donatello, and the rest of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were getting a new animated series to go along with the planned feature film blending live action and CGI effects. Now it looks like the Heroes In A Half Shell will also return to their true roots with a brand new comic book series, too.

IDW Publishing and Nickelodeon recently announced plans for a new series that will kick off this August and feature a creative team led by TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman. While the first story arc will introduce a brand new villain to the TMNT universe — a mutant alley cat named "Old Hob" — all the regulars will also play a role in the rebooted TMNT adventures.

In the official announcement of the comic book series, there's also mention of a new premiere date for the upcoming CGI "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" animated series, now scheduled to air in late 2012. Read More...

The 1990s live-action "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle" movies weren't masterpieces, but as a fan of the cartoon show I always appreciated them for the goofy adventures that they were. The 2007 CG-animated effort went one better, ditching some of the campier bits (and the live-action) and embracing a more mature tone overall.

Now there's a new TMNT fan film on the Internet that you have to check out. It's sort of a fusion of the two eras of Turtles in celluloid, a live-action short that's all grim and ass-kicky.

In fact, you'd better check it out before I say more. We'll reconvene after the video. Read More...

TMNTWhen Nickelodeon picked up the rights to "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" last fall in a $60 million dollar deal, it was clear that the company wanted to make it one of its next franchises. And apparently Paramount — a sister company to Nickelodeon through Viacom — has taken steps to make sure that it happens sooner rather than later.

Deadline is reporting that Paramount has hired screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway to write the screenplay for the new live-action "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie.

The studio is placing the film on a fast-track development cycle and reportedly wants the first draft by October so that the studio can then look for a director to bring the film out in 2012. Read More...

Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesLast year, during the 25th Anniversary of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," word broke that producer Scott Mednick ("300," "Superman Returns") was restarting the "TMNT" film franchise with a new movie that would be a live-action and CGI hybrid.

While "TMNT" co-creator Peter Laird sold the rights to Nickelodeon last October as part of a $60 million dollar deal, the new "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" film now appears to be back on the fast track.

Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form from Platinum Dunes have reached an agreement with Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon to produce the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" reboot, according to Deadline. Mednick will also remain on the project with Galen Walker, one of the producers of the 2007 "TMNT" CGI film. Read More...

Reservoir TurtlesIf you ever thought 1990's live-action "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie really could've used more gritty, pulp-era crime flavor and snappy dialogue, you're in luck.

YouTube User withonea has posted a mash-up trailer for "Reservoir Turtles," a fan-made preview that combines scenes from Leonardo, Donatello and pals' big-screen debut with audio from Quentin Tarantino's slick 1992 film "Reservoir Dogs." And while the combination might seem incompatible at first, the two films actually blend quite nicely, with the entire crew of mask-wearing characters believably voicing the argument over who gets named "Mr. Pink."

Oh, and Leonardo telling Donatello to cut off an uncooperative victim's finger? Priceless. Read More...

Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesEver since the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” debuted in 1984, their original adventures have always had a home at Mirage Studios. However, with the recent sale of the “Turtles” rights to Nickelodeon, the future of Mirage Studios is no longer clear.

In a post on Newsarama, Tristan Jones—the current writer of the “Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” comics—revealed that Mirage Studios, Inc. will close on December 31, 2009.

“The current crew will become independent contractors on January 1 to get the final issues out,” Jones said. “Mirage will continue to publish ‘Tales’ until the May, 2010 issue - but as of now - that’s the end of the line. Peter [Laird] did keep rights for Mirage to publish 18 ‘TMNT’ comic books per year through the direct market, which would only be based on the current Mirage Universe stuff (eg: a continuation/conclusion to Volume 4).” Read More...
