Thomas JaneOne of my favorite actors in the biz these days, "Hung" star Thomas Jane never shies away from talking comics and comic book movies when I interview him. That didn't change when I spoke with him about the upcoming double-screening of "Dark Country," his noir-fueled directorial debut, at Long Beach Comic Con.

The film will receive two 3-D screenings this weekend, including a Saturday night screening with commentary from director and star Jane, production designer Tim Bradstreet (no stranger to the comics world there, either), and Ray Zone, the 3-D supervisor on the film. While we discussed "Dark Country" at length during the conversation, we also spent a little while chatting about past, present, and future comic book movies and his take on where the genre is headed.

"I think I dodged a bullet there," said Jane of "Jonah Hex," this year's critically panned live-action film based on DC's scarred bounty hunter. Originally rumored as a contender for the lead role, Jane confirmed that he read an early script and would've loved to star in a "Jonah Hex" movie — "but not the one that they did." Read More...

Thomas JaneThomas Jane knows exactly how rad AMC’s “The Walking Dead” series is going to be, and he wants a piece.

"That show is going to be a big f---ing hit," he told NBC Washington blog PopcornBiz at HBO’s post-Emmy party. "I've seen it and it is fan-f---ing-tastic."

So far, we’ve only been made privy to the 4.5-minute "The Walking Dead" trailer but we tend to agree. Read More...

Worry not, Punisher fans — Frank Castle has come home.

Announced at the Marvel Studios panel at Comic-Con, the rights for the Punisher have returned to Marvel, allowing the studio to put their character back on the big or small screen in anyway that they see fit. It's excellent news for Castle fans who feel the character hasn't gotten the proper live-action treatment he deserves. With Marvel back at the helm, it's a sure bet that Punisher is going to head back to theaters with a vengeance sometime in the near future.

But with three actors having played Castle over the last 21 years, who could possibly fill the street-level judge, jury and executioner's shoes next? After the jump, you can check out some of our suggestions for who Marvel should cast as the next Punisher! Read More...

Criminal MacabreBack in August, we brought you the news that the comic book series "Criminal Macabre" was headed to theaters courtesy of Universal Pictures. The series, which follows drug-abusing, foul-mouthed private detective Cal McDonald as he investigates all manner of gory supernatural mysteries, regularly featured a familiar face as the model for McDonald on its cover: "Punisher" actor Thomas Jane.

When I recently got Jane on the phone to talk about his directorial debut, the noir thriller "Dark Country," I had to ask him about "Criminal Macabre," too—more specifically, whether there's been any talk of him bringing the downtrodden hero to the big screen.

"[Cal McDonald] is a fantastic character," Jane told MTV News, adding, "I’m born to play that role." Read More...

Thomas Jane - PunisherWhile comic book fans and critics alike didn't look too kindly on 2004's "The Punisher," Thomas Jane's portrayal of Marvel's gun-toting vigilante Frank Castle is widely regarded as one of the high points in the film. The actor has never been shy about his affinity for the character, and very publicly parted ways with the franchise prior to 2008's "Punisher: War Zone," citing creative differences over the character's direction in the films.

I recently spoke to Jane about his impressive directorial debut "Dark Country," a noir-horror thriller that hit shelves this week, and had to ask him what he thought about Frank Castle's big-screen prospects these days—and whether we'll ever see the Punisher movie he's been dying to make.

"My interest has always been based more in reality than in superhero fiction, and with the original 'Punisher' I very much pushed them to try to make a movie that was more like 'Death Wish' or 'Taxi Driver' than 'Spider-Man,'" Jane told MTV News. "The strengths of 'The Punisher' that I did lie in the reality that we were able to bring to the character, and the weaknesses of 'The Punisher' I did were all based on people trying to make this a 'comic book movie'—with funny characters and goofball s--t that has no place in a 'Punisher' film." Back when "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" came out, cinema pundits everywhere wondered if its use of nearly 100-percent CGI sets would usher in a new age of filmmaking. Its lackluster run at the box office put an end to that argument (with "300” being a notable exception), but that isn't stopping other forward-thinking storytellers.

Such is the case with "The Mutant Chronicles," a sci-fi action pic (based on an early '90s role-playing game and subsequent comic book series) starring Thomas Jane, John Malkovich and Ron Perlman. In the film, humans are battling against an army of underworld NecroMutants, and true to form nearly everything except actors and props is set against a green screen. You can check out the results when it hits theaters April 24 (or VOD as of March 27), but for now, check out an exclusive clip below featuring a steampunk-esque dogfight high above the earth.

What do you think of "The Mutant Chronicles"? Think the all-CGI approach will work for Thomas Jane, Ron Perlman and company?

It pleases me immensely that I'm able to type the following sentence: "28th century soldier Major Mitch Hunter leads a fight against an army of underworld NecroMutants." That's the one-line synopsis for "Mutant Chronicles," an upcoming sci-fi indie film that boasts an esteemed cast of no less than John Malkovich, Thomas Jane and Ron Perlman.

Ron Perlman in 'Mutant Chronicles'Click here or on the image above for more exclusive photos from "Mutant Chronicles."

Based on an early '90s role-playing game (which spawned comics), the movie finds four corporations duking it out over the planet's remaining resources when an errant bomb inadvertently unleaches a horde of mutants. Jane (as Hunter) must battle to save humanity, and along the way encounters Brother Samuel (Perlman) and Constantine (Malkovich). Got it? The film will premiere on HDNet Ultra VOD on Friday, March 27th, 2009, followed by a theatrical release in select cities on Friday, April 24.

Thomas Jane, Ron Perlman, John Malkovich and... underworld NecroMutants? What do you think about this big-screen adaptation? Let us know whether you'll be checking it out, and what you think of the photos!

'Devil's Commandos'Among us comic book fans, award-winning artist Tim Bradstreet is best known for supplying jaw-dropping covers to such monthly titles as Marvel's "Punisher" as well as a historic run on Vertigo's "Hellblazer" (not to mention, he's a helluva nice guy). So for a fella as talented as 'Street is, we here at Splash Page aren't too surprised to hear that his creative skills don't stop there.

According to a story posted on ShockTillYouDrop.com, Bradstreet will be teaming up with screenwriter Todd Farmer ("Jason X," "My Bloody Valentine 3D") to write and develop "Devil's Commandos," a Bradstreet-penned story which follows a WWII commando unit who finds themsevles facing off against the armies of Hell. Thomas Jane ("The Punisher") will star in and direct the film, and Jane's RAW Entertainment is set to produce. Read More...

CherFollowing up on what was clearly the wildest (and arguably most hysterical) rumor of the week, Warner Bros. have released word that Cher has in fact not been cast for the role of Catwoman in the next "Batman" film, tentatively titled "The Caped Crusader." Earlier this week, the UK’s Telegraph reported that the 62-year-old singer/actress was in discussions for the role, and that she was Director Christopher Nolan first choice for the role of an aging cat burglar in her twilight years, but a spokesperson for Warner Bros. insisted that "those casting rumors are untrue."
