Captain AmericaFROM MULTIPLAYER: Captain America and Thor will both have big years in 2011. The two Marvel superheroes and original Avengers have their own feature films scheduled to hit theaters, but as of today they also have their own Sega games marked on the calendar.

Though "scheduled release dates are subject to change," according to a Marvel Q3 earnings report, "Thor" is tagged for May and "Captain America" for July. Those releases coincide with Kenneth Branagh's "Thor" and Joe Johnston's "The First Avenger: Captain America," respectively.

Sega's "Iron Man 2" game, meanwhile, is slotted for April 2010, one month ahead of its movie counterpart starring Robert Downey Jr.

Brian BlessedThis morning, fans all across the world woke up to news that Sir Anthony Hopkins is in negotiations to join "Thor" as Odin, the ruler of Asgard and father to the titular God of Thunder. Given the Oscar-winning actor's high profile status, Hopkins' attachment to "Thor" is certainly a surprise, albeit a welcome one.

Still, that's not the only reason to be surprised—after all, wasn't Brian Blessed supposed to be Odin?

Blessed, a longtime collaborator of "Thor" director Kenneth Branagh, was mentioned back in June as a veritable lock for the part of Odin. With Hopkins now securing the part, it's worth wondering why Blessed's attachment was considered such a certainty in the first place. As it turns out, the rumor had a pretty solid source—none other than Blessed himself. Read more...

Anthony HopkinsCasting rumors regarding "Thor" have included some of Hollywood's best and brightest lately, and now it looks like we could have some official word soon on one of the principal characters in the film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar-winning actor Anthony Hopkins is in negotiations to play Odin, the father of Thor, who rules the Norse gods in Asgard. The casting, though not entirely official yet, debunks previous rumors that tagged Shakespearean actor Brian Blessed for the role.

Hopkins, a multiple Oscar nominee who won the award in 1992 for his role as the fiendish cannibal Hannibal Lecter, will join previously announced "Thor" cast members Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster, Thor's love interest) and Tom Hiddleston (Loki, Thor's half-brother and nemesis). Chris HemsworthLast spring's "Thor" casting contest conjured more rumors than most fans could shake an Uru hammer at, so when the storm had finally settled to reveal Chris Hemsworth as the son of Odin, many reserved judgment—that is, until they saw him lead a starship as Captain George Kirk.

While his heroic role fetched plenty of fan support, Hemsworth's biggest booster to date may just be his former "Star Trek" director J.J. Abrams, who had nothing but great things to say about the actor's Starfleet performance.

"It’s very exciting. We really lucked out," Abrams told MTV News in an exclusive interview ahead of the "Star Trek" DVD/Blu-Ray release next month. "He’s so crazy handsome and he’s so strapping with the classic leading man look. I sort of wish I had dirtied him up a little bit, messed his hair up a little bit." Read more...

Sure, we're all looking forward to Marvel's superhero team-up extravaganza "The Avengers" in 2012, but seeing Iron Man, Captain America and Thor on the screen together isn't the only reason it has fans excited.

"Iron Man 2" director Jon Favreau recently wondered how the supernatural world of Thor would blend on the big screen with the reality-based universe Iron Man, and he's not alone in questioning how "Avengers" will handle this mix. So, when I had the chance to pose the question to "Avengers" comic book writer and one of the chief architects of the current Marvel Universe, Brian Bendis, I had to ask what advice he's giving the Marvel movie team when it comes to mixing Thor and Iron Man.

"My advice is, has been, and will be, that much like the comics, you look at movies like the 'Oceans' movies that have all these different flavors, you put the flavors together and you cook 'em," Bendis told MTV News. "It absolutely can be done." Read more...

Dominic CooperIf the possible double-whammy of Jude Law and Robert De Niro joining the cast of "Thor" isn't good enough for you, don't worry—here's another actor's name to throw into the rumor mill.

In an interview with Movieline, British actor Dominic Cooper was asked if he had been approached to play a role in "Thor," the Kenneth Branagh-directed film about Marvel's God of Thunder. The question seemed to come out of left field, but journalist Kyle Buchanan actually had good cause to investigate the matter as Cooper was holding script sides from "Thor" during the interview.

"You know! You're looking at these very confidential pages," Cooper confessed after getting caught with the script sides. "It says 'confidential,' Kyle!" Read more...

Robert DeNiroThe cast for the Kenneth Branagh-directed "Thor" seems to be growing bigger and bigger with each passing week—and while this latest rumor is far from confirmed, it's certainly the project's most interesting potential casting news to date.

According to Ain't It Cool News, a recent interview with actor Matthias Schweighöfer in the German edition of GQ Magazine revealed that actors Jude Law and Robert DeNiro have joined the cast of "Thor" in unspecified roles. Schweighöfer himself allegedly auditioned for a role, though he merely stated that he is "in the running" for a part in the movie.

Of course, the potential involvement of DeNiro, Law and Schweighöfer should be taken strictly as a rumor for now—but that doesn't make the idea of these three actors booking a direct flight to Asgard any less fascinating. Read more...

ThorDuring a panel at last weekend’s Baltimore Comic-Con, "New Avengers" writer Brian Michael Bendis fielded some questions about the upcoming slate of Marvel movies and offered a ringing endorsement of the script for Kenneth Branagh's upcoming "Thor" movie

"I was reading the new script just last night," Bendis told fans, according to a ComicBookResources report on the event. "[It was] very, very good."

Bendis’ comments came shortly after a G4 interview in which he stated that the "Thor" movie would be the surprise hit out of all of the upcoming Marvel movies. Bendis reiterated his description of Branagh’s vision for “Thor” as “Shakespearean.” Read more...

PowersEarlier this year, it was announced that Brian Michael Bendis“Powers” had been optioned as a pilot for FX. And now it appears that the project has taken significant steps forward.

In an interview with G4, Bendis revealed that while the “Powers” TV pilot hasn’t yet been given the green light to shoot, a showrunner and a director are firmly on board.

“Kevin Falls is our showrunner,” said Bendis. “[He] is the Emmy award-winning producer of 'West Wing' and 'Sports Night.' Much higher up on the food chain than I thought we were going to get. Our director is Michael Dinner, who directed the 'Bionic Woman' pilot and 'Sons of Anarchy.'" Read more...

Stellan SkarsgardStellan Skarsgard is the latest addition to the cast of the upcoming “Thor” movie, joining a stellar cast that includes Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Jaimie Alexander and Colm Feore.

According to Swedish news site Ystads Allehanda, Skarsgard—who is perhaps best known in America for his turn as Bootstrap Bill Turner in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film series—confirmed the information in an interview with The Newspapers' Telegram Bureau. However, Skarsgård did not reveal which character he would be playing.

ComingSoon.net has posted a rough translation of Skarsgard’s remarks. Read more...
