Tintin

"The Adventures of Tintin" was one of 2011’s more charming animated films, and audiences agreed: though it didn’t take in tons of money at the American box office, it was a huge overseas success. That’s enough to greenlight a sequel for hypothetical release in 2014 or 2015, depending on how things shake out.

Speaking to TotalFilm, director Steven Spielberg discussed the tentative plans for "Tintin 2," like who will be directing it and what stories they’ll be using.

First off: Spielberg won’t be directing the sequel, unsurprising given his busy work load. "Peter [Jackson]’s doing it," he said. "I wanted to do it, but Peter has to because we made a deal. I said, ‘I’ll direct the first one, you direct the second one.’

Who says live capture animation is for dorks? Not the Visual Effects Society, that’s for sure.

The VES announced nominations for its 10th annual awards ceremony honoring visual effects, with "The Adventures of Tintin" leading the way at six nominations over four categories dedicated to animation. They even snagged three of the five nominations in the Outstanding Created Environment in an Animated Motion Picture category, surely a gut punch to the other animated films that came out this year. But what hope could they have against a cartoon dog?

There are a lot of "Tintin" stories to adapt, more than 20 full-length comics produced over 50 years. We're seeing a handful of them in this year's "The Adventures of Tintin" -- stories like "Secrets of the Unicorn," "Red Rackham's Treasure," and "The Crab with the Golden Claws" -- but the producers have their pick of the litter when it comes to considering a sequel.

As the first movie racks up acclaim on its way towards its Christmas release, The Playlist reports that the producers are considering switching up their plan for a trilogy.

Sometimes, a dedicated filmgoer must make sacrifices. For example, to see “The Adventures of Tintin,” I journeyed from New York City all the way to the UK. Alright, confession time: I didn’t fly to the UK just to see “Tintin.” But since the movie won’t hit US theaters until December 21st, I took the opportunity my overseas vacation afforded me and got a head start on my American peers. It was ?11.20 (plus ?1 for 3D glasses) well spent.

Here are five reasons why you should see “The Adventures of Tintin” when it finally washes up on US shores next month.

Tintin

"The Adventures of Tintin" is still a few weeks away from its release here in the United States, but it's already hitting theaters today in several lucky countries abroad including France, Belgium, Denmark and the United Kingdom.

Reviews have been pouring in already, and the word on director Steven Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson's adaptation of the beloved Hergé-penned stories is good. Very, very good. So good, in fact, that Spielberg and Jackson are already thinking about where to take "Tintin" next.

Tintin comicTintin, the beloved Belgian boy adventurer of comic book fame is well on his way to the big screen.

At the cusp of the New Year we even saw some images from the motion-capture 3D movie, titled “The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn” after the eleventh title in artist Herge’s series. But unlike each and every Hollywood-handled comic franchise under the sun, Tintin is lucky to be a particular passion project for the superteam handling him, director Steven Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson.

No doubt the character and his expansive comic book adventures are equally beloved by Edgar Wright and Steven Moffat, handlers of cult-revered properties “Scott Pilgrim” and “Doctor Who,” and Tintin’s inaugural screenwriters. But the film is first in a series of 3D ventures, and as broadcast out of the UK on Richard Bacon’s Radio 5 talk show and related via Bleeding Cool, the second Tintin movie may already have a new screenwriter.

“I’ve been hired to write ‘Tintin,’” popular children's novel author Anthony Horowitz revealed.

From "Thor" to "Green Lantern" and everything in between, 2011 is most assuredly an excellent year for comic book movie fans. But it's not all capes and tights clogging up theaters next year — comics fans can get their non-superhero fix in the form of "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn," the motion-capture 3D picture from director Steven Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson.

TintinWhile the release of "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of The Unicorn" is over a year away, director Steven Spielberg is already speaking out about the advanced motion capture technology — recently featured in "Avatar" — that allowed him to digitally recreate the look of the original "Tintin" comics by Hergé on the silver screen.

"I just adored it,“ said Spielberg during an interview with the Los Angeles Times. “It made me more like a painter than ever before. I got a chance to do so many jobs that I don’t often do as a director. You get to paint with this device that puts you into a virtual world, and allows you to make your shots and block all the actors with a small hand-held device only three times as large as an Xbox game controller.”

Spielberg also elaborated on the reason he and producer Peter Jackson decided to use digital animation to adapt "Tintin" instead of simply shooting the story as a live action film. “It was based on my respect for the art of Hergé and wanting to get as close to that art as I could." Read More...
