SleeperWhile talking with writer Ed Brubaker about the return of Captain America to the Marvel Comics universe, the recent release of "Sleeper: Season One" (a collection of his 2003-2005 superhero crime series) reminded me that the "Captain America" comic isn't his only project with big-screen connections. But what's going on with the "Sleeper" movie these days?

Back in August, it was announced that "Sleeper" was tagged for adaptation with Sam Raimi producing the film and Tom Cruise starring as Holden Carver, a super-powered secret agent deep undercover within a supervillain cabal and left hanging when the only person who knows he's one of the good guys falls into a coma. In October, word hit the wire that Hollywood newcomer Brad Ingelsby would write the screenplay for the adaptation, but updates have been few and far between since that time.

According to Brubaker, little has changed since the last update -- except for the screenwriter, that is. Read more...

'Sleeper'It's been a few months since we've heard from the "Sleeper" camp -- no, not the 1973 Woody Allen flick, but the upcoming superhero crime thriller based on Ed Brubaker's groundbreaking DC/Wildstorm series. For those who didn't catch the announcement last year, "Sleeper" will be produced by Sam Raimi with Tom Cruise attached to star.

SCI FI Wire had the chance to catch up with Brubaker recently, and from the sounds of things, it looks like "Sleeper" is beginning to quickly wake up on the Hollywood front.

"They have a screenwriter hired," Brubaker said in the SCI FI Wire story, in reference to Brad Ingelsby, who was hired to script the adaptation back in October. "I talked to a producer yesterday, actually, when I was down here, just to make sure it was still happening. He said, 'Oh, not only is it still happening, but it's even more still happening because Tom Cruise's 'Valkyrie' did well.'" Read more...

'Sleeper'It's been a while since we've heard any news from the "Sleeper" front -- the last update being well-over a month ago when we reported that Tom Cruise was rumored to be starring in the film and Sam Raimi was set to produce -- but besides that, things have been relatively quiet regarding info about the production.

However, Variety has broken that silence today with news that Brad Ingelsby has been tapped to write the screenplay for the upcoming film. According to his IMDb profile, Ingelsby is a relative newcomer to Hollywood with only one screenwriting credit to his name (a 2006 short film called "The Honeyfields"), but Variety reports that he recently sold a script titled "Low Dweller" this past March to Relativity Media in which Ridley Scott is attached as director and Leonardo DiCaprio will star. Clearly, Ingelsby's stock is on the rise. Read more...

'Sleeper'For those of you who know comics, Ed Brubaker has long been considered one of the hottest writers in the biz -- but now, Hollywood is starting to take notice.

After today's announcement of a Sam Raimi-produced, Tom Cruise-attached "Sleeper" film making its way to Hollywood, we spoke with Brubaker in an exclusive interview about his thoughts about the project and about the two titans attached to his creation.

While the news of a possible film adaptation of "Sleeper" came as no surprise to Brubaker -- saying that this was probably the fifth time he'd been down that road since the book initially came out -- what did surprise him was how fast this latest round of interest went from speculation to the big news of the day. "I had heard that Tom Cruise was reading the book, and that he might be interested," recalled Brubaker. "Then I got a call three days later telling me that he read all of 'Sleeper,' loved it and said it was totally bad ass, and that he wanted to be in it. It was brilliant of Sam Raimi and his team to attach someone like Tom Cruise and then bring it directly to Warner Bros., who already owned the property." Read more...

'Sleeper'Ed Brubaker's breakout hit "Sleeper" has now joined the ranks of comic series getting the Hollywood treatment, thanks in part to the team-up of none other than Sam Raimi and Tom Cruise.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cruise is "loosely attached" to star in what Warner Bros. hopes will be an all-new franchise, with Raimi on board as producer. The story also reports that, hot on the heels of the recent "Watchmen" legal fiasco, the studio plans to make sure all the contracts and rights are in order before proceeding with production.

"Sleeper" -- created by white-hot comic writer Ed Brubaker with art by Sean Phillips -- ran from 2003-2005 as two, 12-issue seasons from DC's Wildstorm imprint. The story followed Holden Carver, a covert operative who, after fusing himself with a mysterious alien artifact, became impervious to pain. He is later contracted to infiltrate a criminal organization and is faced with numerous perils, including falling in love with a sexy criminal mastermind known as Miss Misery.
