The "Watchmen" Director's Cut DVD hits shelves this week, capping a limited-release run in theaters, and now that we're at the mid-point of 2009 it's hard not to look back on the film a little more fondly. With few blockbuster-level comic book films on the immediate horizon and mixed reactions to the last one ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine") comic fans might feel an understandable urge to revisit Zack Snyder's adaptation of the epic Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons series.
Along with 25 minutes of extra footage (and significantly more violence and gore, according to Snyder), the "director's cut of "Watchmen" will also offer a host of behind-the-scenes clips and making-of video moments -- including the following "The Unfilmable Is Filmed" featurette that puts the vast scope of the project in the spotlight:
The "Watchmen" Director's Cut DVD hits shelves Tuesday, July 21, and will be screened July 25 at Comic-Con in San Diego. Owners of the Blu-ray version of the film will also be able to use the BD Live feature to watch Snyder's Comic-Con panel that accompanies the screening.

Now that “300” is coming out with a super-duper, bells-and-whistles “Complete Experience” Blu-Ray disc on the 21st, it’s had me thinking about the first few times I saw the movie. Like many, I went in not knowing what to expect and came out in awe of Zack Snyder’s flick. And, like many, I’m a bit nervous about the news that Snyder, Frank Miller and their team are willing to revisit the Spartans -- but hoping I’ll once again be awestruck.
“Frank’s working on something,” revealed producer Mark Canton when I caught up with him recently, telling me that he’s onboard to return for Snyder’s “300” sequel. “That, Zack has said.” Read more...
Now that all the overhyped summer blockbusters have begun fizzling out, “Watchmen” sure does look a lot better in the rearview mirror, doesn’t it? Zack Snyder stuck to his guns, bucked the fans when he needed to, and created a dark, thought-provoking blockbuster unlike anything you’re likely to see out of Hollywood again for quite some time.
Recently, he gave me a preview of the “Director’s Cut” Blu-Ray disc that hits theaters July 21st – and along with the Hollis Mason death scene that fans have longed to see, there’s some pretty awesome stuff on there. Read more...
FROM MOVIES BLOG: It’s the bold news that all of Hollywood is still buzzing about, as well as weighing its implications: 10 movies will be nominated for Best Picture at the next Oscars, double the usual amount. But when I caught up with Zack Snyder this week, he had yet to hear the news.
“10?” marveled the “Watchmen” and “300” director, who had been tied up all day doing interviews for those films’ upcoming Blu-Ray releases. “No way!”

In addition to writing a few new "Sin City" stories for "Sin City 2," Frank Miller is also hard at work on a new tale for the sequel to "300."
Director Zack Snyder teased in an April MTV interview that there was a way to continue the franchise, and Miller previously claimed that he would set his new script after "300" during the Greco-Persian Wars and featuring "some of the same characters." Now, Snyder indicates that Miller may be moving along and re-visiting Greece to do research as he completes the graphic novel that will become the "300" sequel. Read more...
If you didn't feel like you got your money's worth paying to see "Watchmen" in its original 162-minute incarnation, there is good news today, because Zack Snyder has announced that the film is returning to theaters in select cities this summer, even longer than before.
"Watchmen: The Director's Cut," which Snyder called "considerably more violent" and "sexier" than the movie's original version, will only be out for a week leading up to its DVD and Blu-ray releases, but the director's will cap the limited run by hosting a July 25 screening at Comic-Con. Sure, he may have just delivered the big screen adaptation comic fans have been itching to see for decades with "Watchmen," but hopefully someone told director Zack Snyder that us comic and movie fans are an insatiable bunch. After all, the blood on the Comedian's pin isn't even dry yet, and we're already asking him about his future funnybook forays: namely, his "Heavy Metal" team-up with co-directors David Fincher and Gore Verbinski that re-imagines the classic, adult-themed animated epic.
"'Heavy Metal,' is coasting," Snyder told MTV News of the in-development project. "I don’t know what’s going to happen, I’m excited about it. I love ‘Heavy Metal,’ if that happens it’ll be great.” Read more...
Earlier this year, it seemed like you couldn't go five minutes without hearing or seeing the name Zack Snyder, thanks to a certain little flick called "Watchmen" and the deafening hype surrounding it. However, a month out from that insanely anticipated, critically acclaimed (yet some would argue, financially disappointing) film, we haven't heard much from Snyder -- so MTV News checked in with the director to find out what the post-"Watchmen" world looks like.
'I’m great," exclaimed Snyder in an exclusive chat with MTV News. "I’m working on 'Guardians [of Ga'Hoole],’ and putting ‘Sucker Punch' together, and we’re just trying to make another movie. The director’s cut of ‘Watchmen,’ is coming out in July, so there’s a lot more ‘Watchmen,’ still to be had, but we’re working on the other movies now.” Read more...
Three years ago, “300” Spartans dined in hell -- and judging by the more than $200 million the film grossed domestically, a lot of fans found their meal to be quite delicious. But -- spoiler alert! -- since almost everyone died at the end, can there ever be a sequel? And if so, would director Zack Snyder be interested in getting behind the camera?
With one simple word, Snyder addressed all of the above: “Sure,” he grinned.
About a year ago, news broke that Frank Miller was developing a “300” quasi-sequel. Snyder, who was in Las Vegas this week to pick up a Director of the Year award at ShoWest, revealed that he has indeed heard Miller’s idea for a graphic novel about the events that followed the key battle of “300” -- and he likes it. Johnny Depp's production company, Infinitum Nihil, already has its script and an impressive lead actor (namely, A-list leading man Depp) tagged for the live-action adaptation of Arvid Nelson and Eric Johnson's comic book series "Rex Mundi." In their search for a "Rex Mundi" director, the bar is remaining as high for the talent behind the camera as it is in front of it.
According to Infinitum Director of Development Sam Sarkar, the studio wants a talent on the level of "Watchmen" mastermind Zack Snyder to bring the Dark Horse series to the big screen.
"We really need to find a guy who has that kind of visual style -- not unlike Zack Snyder," Sarkar told MTV News. "You need a guy that’s that kind of visionary to do 'Rex,' because it’s a really visually complex world." Read more...
